About Steven

I graduated from Shorter College in 2009 with a BS in Chemistry/Biochemistry and a BA in Spanish Literature. I spent four years working during college as a Surgical Assistant for an Oral Surgeon in Rome. In 2012 I completed a Master of Science in Molecular Medicine and Translational Science at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, NC. My primary background is heavily concentrated on biomedical research.

If you are looking for a tutor, you want someone who can allow you to understand the subject, not just learn it. I have practical experience applying the knowledge I tutor and can easily adapt to tutor in the unique way each person learns. Learning a subject if often not adequate- science requires an understanding so that it can be applied to different problems.

A BS in Chemistry/Biochemistry and a MSc in Molecular Medicine and my career experience makes me completely qualified to tutor all life sciences and physics on high school or college levels.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have extensive knowledge of anatomy from both my Bachelor degree and Masters degree. I work in biomedical research where knowledge of human anatomy is crucial for the work I do.

I was also previously a surgical nurse, specifically dealing with oral surgery and maxillofacial trauma.

Biostatistics

I have had formal classes in biostatistics in college and in graduate school, as well as general math classes in statistics. In my research in graduate school I used biostatistics on a semi-daily basis. Experimental outcomes are often measured by calculating a p value based on the data. I also have a reasonable amount of experience using the same statistical analysis techniques in industry while conducting research for medical device companies. I have a formal education in this subject area and I possess applicable experience applying and using its techniques.

Chemistry

One of my Bachelor degrees is in Chemistry/Biochemistry. I have taken several classes like quantitive analysis and instrumental analysis and have applicable experience in a lab with a very wide variety of techniques and instruments.

My MSc degree is in Molecular Medicine is more focused on medicinal chemistry and biochemistry. I have extensive experience working with biomaterials and proteins- as well as stem cells and mammalian cells.

Organic Chemistry

As an undergraduate, I was required to take two semesters of Organic Chemistry for my BS degree in Chemistry. I later completed an independent study as an undergrad that focused on organic synthesis.

My relevant experience with Organic Chemistry is how it is applied in other areas like Biochemistry and Biophysics. To understand the molecules involved in photosynthesis, glycolysis, oxidative metabolism, etc it is important to fully understand the stereochemistry of carbon and how carbon molecules behave in chemical reactions. I completed two semesters of Biochemistry as a undergrad. In graduate school, I completed several advanced courses in Biochemistry and Biophysics.

In my lab research, I use principles from Organic Chemistry daily. Because I work with cells and tissues, almost all of the reagents I use are organic. I have 4 years of experience in biomedical research from graduate school and working in industry for medical device companies. Using concepts form Organic Chemistry daily make it easy for me to teach this subject to students with different backgrounds.

Physics

For my Bachelor degree I completed two semesters of calculus physics for scientists and engineers. I further completed two semesters of Physical Chemistry and two classes in Biophysics. Some of my research involves aspects of biomedical engineering and requires the application of physics to advanced research models.

I have also taken extensive coursework in math, including coursework through Calculus IV, Multivariable Calculus, and Advanced Differentials.

Spanish

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Literature. I have been completely fluent since 2009 and have translated in a professional capacity in part of my career.

I often translate on a volunteer basis for churches and nonprofit organizations that work with the latino community.
