About Melissa

My love for teaching others comes from my lifelong love for learning and for working with/mentoring those who are younger then me. After spending a good portion of my life in academia, I know how challenging academics can be. I also know how putting in hard work with a person who teaches well and has expertise in your area of weakness, can change everything. I want to help you turn your weaknesses into strengths!

I have had the pleasure of tutoring students younger than me since I was in elementary school myself, as part of the Future Florida Educators of America. In high school, I worked with a group called Students Helping Students to provide weekly tutoring for public elementary school students. I also had the privilege of tutoring students in the School Program at Egleston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for three years. While volunteering at the School Program, I tutored short-term and longer-term hospital patients in kindergarten through 12th grade in a variety of subjects to help them keep up with their schoolwork during the most challenging of times.

I have tutored in a variety of subjects, but I specialize in tutoring in the language arts and in the sciences for success in school at all levels including college. To keep the material as relevant and applicable as possible, I base my lessons around what topics students are covering in the classroom and the assignments that they have. I always try to make learning visual, to use analogies and to use a tricks or a pneumonic to remember difficult material whenever possible. All of these strategies can make difficult topics easier to understand and lead to success in the classroom.

I love tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to use my knowledge and experience to help someone achieve their own success. It is incredibly exciting and rewarding to watch someone who did not understand subject material, all of the sudden have their own light bulb turn on, clearly understanding it and feeling successful.

I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I ask for feedback from both the parent and the student. I also like to have an initial complimentary session or conversation where we talk about the material the student is learning in school, the current challenges the student is encountering and what the student’s overall goals are. This will help us make a plan for success going forward.

I try to be flexible, but given my schedule, I have a 10-hour cancellation policy. It is important that we work in an environment that is both quiet and comfortable for the student. I am happy to discuss options for meeting places during our initial discussion.

I took honors Biology and Chemistry in high school. I also took AP Chemistry. I was Pre-Med in college, which included taking General Chemistry and Biology at that college level. And, I went to medical school. I was an Anthropology and Human Biology Major in College as well.

I have been writing and editing as long as I can remember. I have helped others with their writing both formally as a tutor (1st-12th grade) and more informally as a friend (especially editing college application essays). I took AP English in high school passing both exams with high marks. I was a Journalism Co-Major in college and I hold a Masters of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University (Medill School of Journalism). I have written and edited material for multiple publications over the years and I am currently a medical and human interest writer for several clients including Stanford University Children's Hospital. Due to my editing experience, I am highly qualified to teach others how to use proper grammar in their writing and how to understand the grammar rules.

Please feel to contact me with any questions and to schedule tutoring sessions. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to be successful in your studies!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
