I am a certified Teacher with additional certifications in English as a Second Language and Gifted and Talented education. I have been teaching in the public and private sector for over fifteen years. I have experience with students students in all subject areas, including students that are diagnosed with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, auditory processing, ADD, ADHD and those on the Autism Spectrum. I also have experience helping students pass state-mandated exams. Furthermore, I am a trained teaching artist and use my theater background to help reading and writing come to life for students. Sometimes, all the student needs is a boost of confidence as his/her learning is taken at his/her pace.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught for four years at Brookwood Christian Language School located in Acworth, Georgia which services students diagnosed with language based learning disabilities. Besides their language disorder diagnosis, many of these students also had ADD/ADHD. I was also a private tutor for students in neighboring schools all of which had ADD/ADHD and were on some form of medication for it. I know that students with this diagnosis need frequent breaks, the curriculum chunked into smaller chunks, items color coded and/high lighted to give those learners focus, and a tutor that is enthusiastic about their learning progress whether it be large or small.
I taught for four years at a school that serviced dyslexic students. I taught students in elementary, middle, and high school. Such students needed explicit phonics as well as whole language instruction. I have a great track record as well of encouraging junior high school dyslexic students to be better writers. Some of my former students went onto to either dual enroll at a neighboring technical college or graduate and excel in their college level courses.
I am a certified teacher in the areas of Elementary Education and English as a Second Language. I have been teaching students since 2002 in both the public and private sector. I also have a great track record of helping elementary students excel on the end of the year state mandated exams. I am also a teaching artist and incorporate my theater background into my tutoring experiences as well in the areas of English Language Arts.
My experience with handwriting is a very tactile approach. For struggling students I will use more manipulatives so they can practice the stroke and shape of the letter. In working with dyslexic students I had them work on spacing, cursive, and color coding.
Phonics is one of the most important building blocks of reading and writing. It is the sound that the letters make. Teaching phonics was embedded in my studies to become a teacher and is implemented in the classroom on a daily basis as I teach now.
Study Skills I implemented in my teaching in both the private and public sectors. Teaching organization and time management are also essential to study skills as one can not be successful without having mastered both.
