Duke University (PhD)
I have a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University with a strong background in math and science and love for teaching. I am a highly effective high school math teacher who is taking time off for family reasons. I am eager to instruct and motivate students to excel and train them to be the problem-solving scientists and professionals of the future. Ever since I was in high school, I have enjoyed tutoring students in math and the sciences, reading and writing. I found it extremely rewarding to see the confusion in someone's eyes transform to the light of understanding.
While obtaining my education, I have acquired many skills that make me an exceptional tutor. Apart from the rigorous training in math, science, and engineering, I have learned to be self-motivated, driven, and an effective communicator. I am a published author with superior writing skills and I have a keen appreciation for diversity, the value of good interpersonal skills, and team work. As a high school math teacher, I earned a reputation for being dedicated to my students' learning as well as patient and creative.
My tutoring experience is extensive. As an undergraduate student, I was a math and physics tutor while on the payroll of the Math Lab at the university and became a frequently requested tutor there. While serving as a graduate school teaching assistant in bioengineering classes at Duke University, I had the opportunity to teach classes, prepare and grade assignments, and provide one-on-one assistance to students. I was then requested to mentor visiting summer college students at Duke and provide them with projects in our laboratory, training, and advising. Because of my ability to disseminate information with clarity and patience, I was repeatedly asked to serve as a mentor in the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program.
I know the value of understanding and would be honored to provide the deeper understanding you seek for success in classes and assignments and ultimately future careers. I am looking forward to helping you achieve the grades and the confidence you deserve! Nelita has been a delightful and thorough tutor. She is understanding, patient and easily accessible. I have been most impressed with her preparedness and genuine care that the time spent with my daughter is worthwhile. Nelita aims to make sure that EVERY lesson is meaningful and that both parent and student are satisfied. Her expertise has helped improve grades; and more importantly, restored confidence in both science and math.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
