About Dan

I first started tutoring high school students when I was in high school myself. While I was an undergraduate in college, I continued tutoring high school students in math and chemistry and began working with college chemistry students as well. While I was working on my Master's degree in chemistry at the University of Georgia, I held my first "official" teaching position--as a teaching assistant for general chemistry lab classes. This experience solidified my interest in teaching. I also continued tutoring other students in chemistry (general and organic) outside of these classes.

From June 2014-May 2015, I worked as a general chemistry instructor at the Oconee campus of the University of North Georgia, where I received course evaluations with all fields routinely scoring above 4/5. This is the job that truly made me realize that I had a vocation for teaching. I currently work as the chemistry and biology undergraduate lab coordinator at Wesleyan College in Macon, where I continue the rewarding task of contributing to science education in a university setting. I have retained my passion and aptitude for tutoring students one-on-one, and there is still nothing quite like the moments I get to experience when working with students individually and seeing them finally "get it."

Even though I don't have a degree in math, it's always been something that I've been successful in tutoring people. I made a 780 on the SAT math section and a 5 on the AP calculus (AB) exam in high school, but I do a good job of not being "too smart to teach" (either intentionally or unintentionally). I have the most experience tutoring high school students in algebra 1, algebra 2, pre-calculus and calculus, but I would be comfortable tutoring any student in any math subject up to college-level calculus II.

I have a year of experience in teaching college classes in general chemistry, and I have been helping students (whether as a tutor or teaching assistant) in general and organic chemistry classes for the better part of a decade. I have received almost universally positive feedback through course evaluation systems when I have taught classes at these levels.

I also have experience tutoring high school students in chemistry. When I was in high school myself, I made a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam, so I am familiar with AP-level chemistry in particular; however, I have tutored students in non-AP high school-level chemistry as well. I am confident in my ability to help anyone at any level of chemistry, from high school through virtually any undergraduate-level course.

If you would like to contact me regarding tutoring for organic chemistry or any 200 level or above collegiate chemistry courses, please let me know what exactly you would like to cover during our meeting.

If reading over my profile has piqued your interest, I would encourage you to send me a message to set up a time to meet. I am available at 7:00 p.m. or later on weekdays or virtually any time on the weekends.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored math for many years, ranging from pre-algebra to calculus. I made a 780 on the SAT math section in high school.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of the subjects I have tutored high schoolers in most often. Algebra is something that I have used on a regular basis as someone with a career path in science, and I am confident in my ability to help others learn it. I understand that it is a subject that gives many people a lot of trouble, and I am more than willing to work with anyone to help them through it.

Calculus

I am familiar with the AP Calculus exam, as I made a 5 on it in high school.

Chemistry

I currently hold a Master's degree in chemistry. I have tutored chemistry at the high school, AP, college-level general, and organic levels in the past. I worked for one year at the University of North Georgia as a general chemistry instructor.

Elementary Math

I have many years' experience tutoring high school and college-aged students in many areas of math. In fact, tutoring in this area is one of the first things that helped me realize how much I enjoy teaching and that I do well explaining things in a way that helps people understand them. I am confident in my ability to help people struggling at many different levels of math.

Geometry

Geometry really stands out when it comes to math classes in high school--in particular, many people that have done well in other math classes struggle with geometry. I understand how different the challenges that this subject presents can be, and I draw on my extensive experience tutoring students in math to help navigate them through this unusual subject.

Organic Chemistry

I have a Master's degree in chemistry and have tutored students in organic chemistry before. Part of my thesis work involved organometallic chemistry, for which an intimate understanding of organic chemistry is a pre-requisite.

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra is a very critical course when it comes to developing the skills and knowledge that students will require moving into more advanced math classes. I have tutored students at many levels of math, pre-algebra included, and I am confident in my ability to help people struggling with the concepts in this course.

Precalculus

I have tutored calculus and pre-calculus quite often over the past decade. I am familiar with both subjects, and understand that establishing the fundamentals in precalculus is very important for anyone that will be moving on to higher math classes. I would be happy to help anyone learn this crucial subject.

Probability

I have experience tutoring statistics and made a 5 on the AP Statistics exam in high school. Additionally, my career path in science and science education has kept me up to speed on the concepts in statistics since that time. Understanding probability is, of course, essential to statistics, and one of the ones I feel most confident in my ability to teach others.

SAT Math

When I was in high school, I made a 780 on the SAT math section; since that time, I have had experience tutoring others to help maximize their SAT math scores. I would be happy to help anyone striving to achieve their best possible result on this critically important exam. I understand the SAT scoring system and would be happy to help anyone feeling uncertain about testing strategy as well.

Statistics

When I was in high school, I made a 5 on the AP Statistics exam, and have continued to use statistics as a graduate with a science degree.

Study Skills

Helping students learn has always been my passion, and helping people learn how to study is just as important as helping them learn the subject matter itself. I've seen through my years of experience that not everyone learns in the same way or at the same pace, and I try to apply that knowledge to each individual student's needs. Using the right approach and helping students help themselves is key in getting them to succeed.
