About Joana

I graduated in 2012 with a double major in Biomedical Science and Spanish Language. I worked throughout all of college and am now a medical student. I worked as a tutor for the student athletes. I spent one year helping students master various levels of math from algebra to calculus. I also helped students in biology and chemistry. Many students can find these subjects difficult, but I find them simple and enjoyable and try my best to empower students to not be afraid. Once I teach them the handful of ways a question can be asked, most students find they are quite capable of tackling what they thought was a complex question. I really enjoy watching others master a question or concept they previously thought was beyond them. There is nothing as satisfying as watching someone else feel proud and accomplished.

I am fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese. Aside from my formal education, I was raised speaking Portuguese with my mother and her family (who are Brazilian) and Spanish with my aunt and her extended family. I've had very good experience breaking this down for students before.

My SAT reading score was 660, and I have since read much more in both English and Spanish and have learned to pull apart an essay. My SAT writing score was good and I have since written a thesis and learned more about various writing styles.

I would love to be able to help any student during the summer or school year. Please feel free to contact me and I will respond within a few hours usually.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In college I primarily tutored math and the most popular subject was Algebra. I have taken up to Calculus 2 in college; prior to that I took the IB and AP Calculus 1 math exams and passed (5/7 and 4/5). What calculus students quickly learn is that calculus is 2 lines of calculus and 5 lines of algebra; all math comes back down to algebra and being able to rearrange the equation.

Biochemistry

I'm a 4th year medical student who has taken Biochem both in undergrad and in medical school. I can offer a unique perspective to college students on why they are learning what they are learning. Biochem isn't just a stagnant class, but has hundreds of real world applications.

Flute

I have been playing the flute for 12 years. I learned in 6th grade, played in high school in the marching band and in the concert band. I continued to play at my university in the honors band, and now currently play just for my own enjoyment.
I can read music with ease and now the fingerings for the extended scale. My personal flute has the low B key as well.

Genetics

I am currently a medical student. Along with the med-school levels genetics classes I have taken, I have also taken genetics at an undergraduate level and have been tested on it numerous times. Genetics has turned up on my MCAT and USMLE Step 1.

Martial Arts

I have been practicing various forms of martial arts for 8 years. I learned various forms of karate (Shorin-Ryu, Shotokan), and have recently taken up MMA (Muy-Thai and Gracie Jiu Jitsu).
In karate i received a green belt with brown tips (also known as a second level green belt). In MMA I tested only once and received a White-2 rank.

MCAT

I am currently a medical student who passed the MCAT. My strength was in the biology section where I scored an 8, and in the reading/writing portion where I scored a 10.

Portuguese

My mother was a Portuguese language teacher in Brasil for 20 years. When she moved to America and had me, she insisted on my fluency. I have been speaking Portuguese since I was a little girl and do not remember a time when I didn't speak it. I regularly converse with family members in Brasil and read magazines from Brasil. When I visit, most Brasilians can't tell that I grew up in the states because my Portuguese is very fluent and has few if any grammatical errors.

SAT Math

Wyzant has certified me in SAT math.

Spanish

I grew up in Florida speaking Spanish. I have been formally taught since kindergarten and currently hold a Bachelor's in Spanish language. I also have family members that I regularly speak Spanish with.

Great Tutor

I love the way she breaks things down and simplify them. Her methods are easy to understand. She is much better at teaching math than my math teacher at school. With her things just click a whole lot easier.
