About Lee Ellen

Hello Prospective Students and Parents!
My name is Ellen and I just finished my Master of Science in Physics from Georgia State University. I earned my undergraduate degrees from University of Hawaii and did a double major of Bachelor's of Science of Astronomy and Bachelor of Arts in Physics. I also earned a minor in Math because I LOVE MATH!!
I have taken nearly every college math class I could and have enjoyed all of them. I am easy going and really enjoy conveying my love of math and science to students. For the past 3 years during graduate school I have been teaching Astronomy and Physics labs, and during this time I have realized that many students come to college fearing and even hating math. This is something I want to remedy!
I took both AP Physics and BC (a tad more advanced than AP) Calculus in high school and passed both of those AP exams. I feel very confident in my ability to help students who struggle in any area of math from the earlier forms like algebra and trigonometry all the way up through calculus and differential equations. Physics is a perfect way to apply math skills and I have studied physics for as long as I can remember, so this would be another area of expertise for me.
I have also spent a lot of time working with computer programing and for my Master's research I programmed a model of a cortical neural network to study aspects of migraine headaches, thus I would also feel comfortable tutoring in the area of computer science, especially in the MATLAB format.
Lastly, I love Astronomy. Astronomy is how I learned that I was a 'science nerd' at heart and really found the beauty in Math and Physics through this subject. In my experience, most students who struggle with Astronomy courses in school truly struggle with the physics or math involved, and again this would be an area where I could be of much assistance.
All in all, I am a person who loves to learn and loves to teach. There is nothing more rewarding than realizing a student finally gets a concept that has troubled them for some time! I have spent a lot of time teaching, tutoring, helping class mates and learning during my studies and I am currently looking for work as a teacher in high school math or physics or astronomy in the Macon, GA area. However, I feel like many students benefit so much from one-on-one help that pursuing tutoring at the same time is very important to me.
I look forward to hearing from any students and/or parents that feel they may benefit from my services and look foreword to learning together!
UPDATE: I am now a science teacher here in Macon! So during the school year, I tutor for SAT prep and AP Calculus Only!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored students for the ACT math test extensively in both Hawaii and in Texas. I am very familiar with the test format and timing. Algebra, Geometry and Trig are the area covered on this test, and the timed format can make it a challenge for a lot of students. I am very well versed in these subjects as I have been using them daily in my studies for many years, and I am also very good at helping students acquire methods of quick problems solving ideal for the ACT test format.

ACT Science

I have tutored students for the ACT Science test extensively in both Hawaii and in Texas. I am very familiar with the test format and timing. Data representation, Research Summaries and Conflicting viewpoints are the areas covered on this test, and the timed format can make it a challenge for a lot of students. I am very well versed in these subjects as a graduate student you spend 60% of your time reading and understanding research papers which covers all three of the subject areas. I am also very good at helping students acquire methods of quick problems solving without getting caught up in the over-wordiness of the science problems which is ideal for the ACT test format.

Algebra 1

Algebra is used consistently through physics and astronomy. I have an undergraduate bachelor's degree in both of these fields, along with a minor in Math. I also have a Master's in Physics. I have been using algebra almost daily for over 15 years. I have tutored friends and students in this area of study. I have also been teaching algebra-based physics labs for the past 3 years.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is used consistently throughout physics and astronomy. I have an undergraduate bachelor's degree in both of these fields, along with a minor in math. I also have a master's in physics. I have been using algebra 2 almost daily for over 15 years. I have tutored friends and students in this area of study. I have also been teaching algebra-based physics labs, which incorporates both algebra 1 and algebra 2, for the past three years.

Calculus

I have been using Calculus almost daily for over 11 years. I have tutored friends and students in this area of study. I have also been teaching calculus-based physics labs for the past 2 years. I took and got A+ in Calculus 1, 2, 3 & 4 in college as well so am well studied on all levels of Calculus.

Prealgebra

Algebra is used consistently through physics and astronomy. I have an undergraduate bachelor's degree in both of these fields, along with a minor in Math. I also have a Master's in Physics. I have been using algebra almost daily for over 15 years. I have tutored friends and students in this area of study. I have also been teaching algebra-based physics labs for the past 3 years. Pre-algebra is the foundation for many future levels of mathematics and is an inherent part of my knowledge!

Precalculus

I have been using calculus almost daily for over 11 years. I have tutored friends and students in this area of study. I have also been teaching calculus-based physics labs for the past 2 years. I took and got A+ in Calculus 1, 2, 3 & 4 in college as well so am well studied on all levels of Calculus. Pre-Calculus makes sure a student understands the basic elements they will need to proceed onto calculus, thus my calculus qualifications also serve as pre-calculus qualification!

SAT Math

I earned a perfect score on the Math section of my SAT junior year in high school. I am very familiar with all the areas of math covered and have tutored friends for the math section of the SAT. I have the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Astronomy, Bachelor of Arts in Physics, Minor in Math, and Master of Science in Physics. All of these degrees rely very heavily on math, and in fact, math is my favorite subject of all! I love doing math at all levels and even more I love teaching math.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an integral part of all upper level mathematics. I have been using trig in my studies for many years and am thus VERY familiar with this subject. I have tutored many students in Trig, whether is was for a specific trig class, or it was physics or calculus or a number of other subjects where trig is a key part! This is one of my favorite subjects to teach and I have a lot of good methods for remembering the needed trig identities and understanding trig on a conceptual level.
