About Scott

My passion is learning and then patiently helping others to grasp what I have come to understand. I have found assisting others to make those connections, to have those "light bulb" moments, to be entirely rewarding. Whatever the subject, no matter the topic, I love to teach!

Some of my favorite subjects: Math, English and Literature, Piano, Basketball, and Baseball. Also, I help edit papers and give suggestions for improvement. I am willing to work with all ages and all skill levels.

I look forward to hearing from you. If you are interested to know if I am the right fit for you, send me an email. I am happy to talk through your needs and goals and to allow you to get to know more about me and what I can do to assist you.

Qualifications:
I have a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Georgia College and State University and am certified to teach Math and English for 6th through 12th grades.

I have previously tutored grades 4-6 on a weekly basis at the Agape Community Center in Chicago and have filled mentoring positions at the South Asian Friendship Center in Chicago and Big Bro Big Sis in Chicago.

I formally studied piano and music theory for 9 years and have played for 13 years and have won multiple awards including first place in classical piano in a state competition twice and third place in classical piano in a national competition.

I have had experience editing a wide range of works: books, online articles, a doctoral dissertation, class papers, articles for Rejoice Always magazine, and more.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have had many opportunities to work with elementary students. I volunteered weekly for a year at the Agape Community Center, an after school program for inner-city youth in Chicago. A significant portion of each afternoon was spent tutoring the students and assisting with homework. I mentored and occasionally tutored elementary students through the South Asian Friendship Center in Chicago for 3 years. I have coached elementary students for two years in Upward Basketball. I have assisted in Vacation Bible School for many years and with various grade levels. And I have had numerous opportunities to spend time with and invest in elementary students in children's homes in Peru and Honduras, community centers in the United States, and a Big Bro Big Sis program in Chicago.

Piano

I formally studied piano and music theory for 9 years and have played for 13 years. I have had the opportunity to play in numerous recitals, festivals, competitions, church services, weddings, and other venues. I have won multiple awards including two first place awards in classical piano at state competitions and third place in classical piano at a national competition.
