About Lisa

I have 8 years teaching experience both as an inclusion co-teacher and self-contained teacher in a public high school. I have worked with a wide range of students with learning disabilities such as: Autism, Down Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. I enjoy the one-to-one interaction with students to help them learn at their pace and not to overwhelm them with lessons they don't understand. The student works at his or her own learning speed and comprehension and eventually I introduce lessons to promote high level learning to challenge but never drown the student. I want to always create a positive and productive learning environment with lessons that start off simple and build to encourage learning milestones. Not only do I teach academic lessons but also life skills such as: simple cooking lessons, cleaning up after ones self, and operating basic appliances such as a washer and dryer.

When I see the progress of a student learning something new and meeting that challenging milestone, whether it takes 2 months or 9 months, I give tons of accolades in praises and sometimes even rewards such as a favorite candy, or food as long as it's acceptable by the parent. I encourage parents to remain with myself and their child at all times so they can see what lessons we are doing and make comments with anything I am teaching to create a great learning experience for the child. Parents are the best resource for knowing what their child can and cannot accomplish and knowing particular behaviors of their child.

I have Co-taught grades 9-12 English and basic reading skills.

I have worked with students with Autism, ADD and ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome

Please send an email or text message if you are interested in setting up tutoring with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have worked 4 years with students diagnosed with ADHD as a special education teacher and have presented lessons to these students that promote learning. If the student had trouble writing their name, I would present a lesson that encouraged them to trace their name. If the student could not count money, I would introduce a lesson that first practiced identifying U.S. coins then counting the money to meet a buying lesson. If the student needed to learn to read, I would introduce Dolch sight words initially then read from short stories on a first grade level and work our way up.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been teaching students diagnosed with Autism over 4 years in a public school. I have presented academic lessons in reading, writing, and math that cater to the learning abilities of students with Autism. The lessons are presented and broken down to meet the slower pace of students with learning disabilities.

Special Needs

I have taught children with learning disabilities in a small group setting for 8 years. I worked 4 years as a co-teacher in the inclusion classroom for English and Math in a public high school. I have also worked with severe and profound students in a self-contained classroom setting for 4 years and understand students who need lessons "broken down" to help them understand the concept more clearly. I also have a Special Education Master's Degree in Cross Categorical K-12 students with learning disabilities.
