Hello! I am a recent Master’s student from San Diego State University, with a BA from UC Irvine. I studied and pursued degrees in both US (BA) and World (MA) histories with minors in Political Science and Creative writing. I have journeyed for roughly ten years as a tutor and even obtained more recent experience as an educator at the university level. I have primarily taught in the fields of history and writing, but have experience in a wide array of disciplines and levels. I have educated students from middle school through the graduate level, from basic writing techniques to more complex historiographical and research projects. While a graduate student, I served as an advisor and mentor to college students of all levels and taught survey history classes and a graduate seminar. I have a deep passion for education and have an immense drive to help facilitate a student’s greater success!

When working one on one with a student, I am a strong proponent of person-centered planning and curriculum. Learning is complex and I never find that there is a one size fits all approach. Learning each students strengths and deficits is an integral component for selecting the correct approach. Periodically talking directly with the student about what they feel is holding them back, as a sort of metacognitive exercise, can really help get to the root of any difficulty. If the student is against you or being forced to do things a certain way, it can hamper progress! Good communication and feedback is such an important aspect of my teaching, as it allows the student to be more engaged in the structuring and direction of their tutoring to find an approach that they can agree with.

Most students can seek to improve their writing, no matter what level they are at, and this is an area that I have likely garnered the most experience with. Beginning with any student who seeks to improve their writing first starts with an understanding of where their writing is at and where they would like it to be (or think it should be). Great Tutor, Very smart and good with kids

Josh did a virtual lesson with my 18 year old son and it went very well. He does a great job connecting with kids. He established his own credibility quickly and effectively, made a personal connection and got down to business. Very impressive personal skills. Also clearly a very intelligent guy. Highly recommended!
