Hello! My name is Justine and I have been a certified teacher for the past 16 years. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education (K-8), with a concentration in Social Studies. I also possess a Master of Science Degree in Reading and Literacy Development.
I have a wide range of experiences. I have taught math, science, social studies, and reading to students in grades first through sixth and have held the position of Reading First Literacy Coach. As a literacy coach, I took an active role in improving classroom reading instruction and intervention by sharing my expertise through training and in class support. I have obtained the experience and expertise to deliver differentiated instruction using scientifically based research models. I am capable of identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to address diverse learning needs and to improve all students’ achievement.
As an educator, my mission is to meet the specific needs of each student. I plan lessons based on the individual’s level and need. I give each student a variety of opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills through positive, creative, and flexible instruction. I teach each student their importance to society, and help develop self-esteem and critical thinking skills.
I have the experience and education to help each student reach his or her goals. I will put my heart and soul into helping the student improve their academic abilities, but I cannot do it alone. I need the student’s commitment to learn. I will be there to assist, but it will require real effort on the student’s part to achieve success.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a seasoned educator with a recognized track record of 16 years experience teaching elementary/middle school. I have professional expertise in adaptive education with a focus on improving academic outcomes and facilitating social and emotional growth. I am skilled at identifying students in crisis and formulating a plan of intervention. I possess a superior ability to provide individualized virtual and in-person learning while utilizing exemplary oral and written communication skills to deliver a customer focused approach.
I tutor individuals and small groups in reading, spelling and handwriting, using the Orton-Gillingham approached to reading. I also teach students how to utilize reading strategies. In math, some of the ways I help struggling students grasp concepts is by using manipulatives, interactive games and model drawing.
I am an experienced educator with a Master of Science Degree in Reading and Literacy Development. Part of my studies focused on a balance approach to teaching reading, which included teaching phonics.
What is phonics? Merriam-Webster defines it as a method of teaching beginners to read and pronounce words by learning the phonetic value of letters, letter groups, and especially syllables. I would like to add to that. Phonics is the set of relationships between phonology and orthography. Focus is not placed solely on individual letters, but on spelling patterns.
When teaching phonics to students in the lower grades, I like to use the Orton-Gillingham approach. Students have had much success with this program. It incorporates phonics, spelling, reading, vocabulary, sight words, handwriting, prefixes and suffixes.
I received my Master of Science degree in Reading and Literacy development and have served as a Reading First Literacy Coach where I worked with parents and teachers in developing students reading skills. I am very knowledgeable of various strategies to use to help increase comprehension and fluency.
