Florida Atlantic University (BA) (Elementary Education)
I am a veteran teacher with a variety of experience and certifications. I have taught every grade level except 4th and 7th, and most of my experience (22 years) was as a 6th grade teacher in a middle school in Florida. I am certified to teach elementary school, middle school reading, language arts, and social studies, high school civics, world history, and US History in Georgia. I am also certified to teach special education and gifted students. I am currently teaching at Lincoln County Elementary School. I have a great deal of experience improving the performance of students that may not learn in traditional ways. I have shown a 96% success rate when teaching remedial students of raising their reading level to grade level, or above.
I enjoy tutoring because my greatest joy is to see students succeed. Every child is gifted in some way. The key to success is to find out the strength of a child, and to approach learning from that strength. When working with individual children, one can develop a program specifically designed to help that child. As the child becomes more confident, a plan to incorporate that program into the child's school experience lends itself to increased independence and responsibility. Ironically, my greatest joy is when the student no longer needs to be tutored.
My degree is in Elementary Education, but other areas of study include Creative Writing, Theater, Psychology and History. In the 37 years I have been teaching, I have incorporated those subjects into whatever I am teaching. Without fail, my students have increased their ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. I try to get my students to think, rather than memorize. Roger Lewin once said, "Too often we give our students answers to remember, rather than problems to solve."
With the exception of fourth grade, I have taught every level in elementary school. This means I know where my students are coming from and where they are headed. I have gifted certification and special education certification, so I am able to reach both ends of the spectrum, and especially those students that are "twice exceptional."

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
