About Emily

I have loved learning since I was a child. And, in particular, I have loved reading. I used to read while riding my bike to school (not something I would advocate!), and I currently read whenever I have a spare moment. For the past three years I have taught composition and literature at the college level and tutoring, realizing how much I love seeing my students develop a love of the written word. The entire process from coming up with ideas to writing and editing is one that I know can be difficult, but I love the process of breaking it down and exploring the questions and numerous paths one can take.

I have extensive experience in writing and reading, have a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing, a Master's degree in English Literature, and experience as a freelancer, and editor for literary magazines. And, I am currently enrolled in a Master's in Instruction and Curriculum for Children's Literature. For me, learning is infectious, and seeing my students begin to realize the potential they possess is one of the keys to becoming a reader and writer.

I specialize in writing about literature, the writing process, creative writing, for both school success and personal improvement. I work with late elementary to college students in all aspects of their writing lives. My goal is to keep my students interested and challenged, and I will often use homework assignments to strengthen their abilities.

For tutoring sessions, I am more than willing to go to where the student feels safe. Whether it is a library, bookstore, coffee house, or your own home, I have found that the more comfortable the student is, the more engaged they will be.

I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I can always make time for a make up session, and I can often do emergency sessions as well.

I really look forward to hearing from you and helping you become a strong and confident writer!

As an English tutor, I am a quick adapter. Not every student learns the same, and so not every student can be taught to consider a novel or poem or play the same. Because we all have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to writing, I often start with the big picture before narrowing in on the skill, which means I do a lot of discussion with my students to get them to reach a new idea.

I also employ the "Tell Me" method of analysis, in particular for those who need to learn to analyze but also for those who need some help with reading comprehension. The "Tell Me" method involves starting with broad questions such as "What did you like/dislike?", "What did you find confusing?", 'DId you find any patterns?", and "Do you have any questions?". From there we narrow down the discussion. This method helps readers of all ages learn to spot information in the text that they might not have seen or understood previously.

When it comes to writing, I do not utilize the 5 paragraph essay in older students. While this is a great learning tool before writing skills are fully developed, it serves only to narrow the student's scope too much. Instead, I focus on what the research topics are, building the essay around what needs to be said, not a formula.

I would love to hear from you if you are interested in improving your grades in English or if you are interesting in improving your writing skills for all around success in school. Writing is integral to success in life, and I would love to help you explore and develop those skills.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson, and I will get back to you within a few hours.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
