I’m Richard. I graduated with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and a Graduate Degree in Mathematics Education. As an experienced middle and high school teacher, I am certified to teach all grades in middle school, Algebra 1&2, Geometry, Study Skills, and Test Prep.

While teaching, I also tutored privately. My goal was to create independent learners capable of transitioning from once or twice a week to only meeting on an as needed basis. I taught middle and high school mathematics for 25+ years and tutored for 15 years. I hold a valid teaching certificate in both Florida and Georgia in Mathematics as well as being gifted endorsed.

Along with tutoring state required courses, I also help students to score well on assessments such as the accuplacer exam. This exam is not topic centered as in a typical math class. The tutor needs to be able to help the learner to understand a variety of topics, sometimes in the same session. As a mathematics major, I understand these topics and can present them in an easily understood method.

Since I am retired, my schedule is flexible. I can meet you at your most convenient time and location. I am here to help you to accomplish your goals whether they are to make better grades in school or to improve test taking skills. I will meet you either in your home or in another location such as a bookstore or library.

GRE

GRE

When I took my GRE to get into Florida State University, it was under the old scoring system. I scored 770 in the Mathematics portion of the computer based test. I have the ability to explain mathematics on any level from elementary, to college. I believe in meeting the student where they are in their prior knowledge.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and a graduate degree in Mathematics Education from Florida State University, including Algebra 1. Before retiring, I taught and tutored for 20 years. I was selected as a trainer to help teachers to infuse technology in the classroom to serve a generation of students who embrace technology more so than their parents.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2, I have found, is a deeper investigation in topics from Algebra 1 along with the introduction of new and more rigorous standards. I taught both courses, and am convinced that the standards from the Georgia Standards in Algebra 2 prepare a student for the rigor encountered in a college course. Before retiring, I was selected as a trainer for the Ti-84 and used the Ti-84 CE in my classroom teaching Algebra 2.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have a passion for geometry that I am trying to install in all students. Given a choice most students will pick algebra over geometry. I believe that’s true because geometry is more dependent on properties, theorems and proofs. I pride myself in the way that I connect these to prior knowledge and explain them in student language rather than teacher language.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I am a retired middle and high school mathematics teacher with more than 20 years of teaching experience. I believe that pre-algebra is important to your son or daughter’s success in high school. In my experience, at this point in mathematics, parents struggle with the content and many students say “That’s not the way my teacher taught me.” I feel that I have been given a talent for teaching mathematics and use that talent to help others.

GED,

GED

Although I taught Mathematics for College Readiness in High School, I have a broad base of high school subjects for the GED. I often helped students with other subjects when covering classes. I am considered to be an effective writer by my peers, so I have to know the rules for punctuation and grammar. In conclusion, I once worked as a professional in a non-profit youth agency. Effective writing accompanied the daily responsibilities.

Test Preparation

Accuplacer,

Accuplacer

Since the accuplacer is a pre-qualifying exam that places incoming college students, I feel more than qualified with an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a graduate degree in mathematics education. Not only am I qualified to teach the concepts necessary for success, but I know how to explain these concepts. As a high school teacher, I taught a course called Mathematics for College Readiness for 8 years. This gives me valuable insight for the level of mathematics assessed by the accuplacer.
