I am a single mother of four beautiful children, I have two son's that have graduated from high school and two little ones (9 and 3). I absolutely love working with children. I attended Ashford University from 2008-2013 where I earned my Bachelor's of Arts as a my Master's Degree. My background includes working with children in preschool, I have worked with children of all ages (six weeks to twelve years old). Up until last school year I worked at Kids R Kids Learning Academy where I taught Jr. Kindergarten (private Pre K) where I taught four year old's a first grade curriculum. By the time my students got into Kindergarten some of the things they could do were: write very well, read, add, subtract, do some fractions, tell time and they knew well over 50 sight words.
Currently I am a paraprofessional in the Gwinnett County School System, I am studying now to take the GACE so the I can become a certified teacher. I have been a tutor for over four years specializing in reading and writing for elementary grade students. I love tutoring and helping students become A+ students. It is my goal to make every student feel comfortable and not nervous when we are working together. I make the learning session fun and provide constant praise. I encourage the student to complete activities that I assign and give feedback to parents after every session.
Reading and Language Arts has always been my favorite subjects. I excelled in school in these areas. I love to read and I love teaching students to read. When working at Kids R Kids I had to teach my four year old's to read and write, I was amazed at how well they did. They entered Kindergarten reading on an end of year Kindergarten level or on a beginning first grade level.
Since I was teaching on a first grade level in my private Pre K class, a part of our curriculum was handwriting. My students were required to write in journals twice a day so I did small groups to work with them on handwriting. While working for Gwinnett County Schools, we use "Handwriting Without Tears" to teach our students to use the correct technique for forming letters properly.
Phonics is a very huge part of what I do when teaching students how to read. They have to know how to sound words out before they can read. I work very closely with the students to make sure they know all of their letters sound and are able to blend sounds so that they are read fluently.
During the summer and winter breaks I am available from 9-6, during the school year I am available from 4-7. I can come to you or meet you at a local library. My rate per hour is 50.00, I offer discounts for more than one session a week. I would love the opportunity to work with your child and help him or her gain the knowledge and confidence he/she needs to be successful in elementary school. I look forward to hearing from you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught an advanced Private Pre K class at Kids R Kids Learning Academy in Lawrenceville, GA where I taught 4 year old's a 1st grade curriculum. This curriculum included handwriting (daily writing in journals), writing sentences (learning to write from left to right as well as forming letters correctly on the lines). Also, teaching them when to use capital letters when writing.
As a private Pre K teacher, I taught my students over 200 sight words as well as vocabulary words. I taught them letters and letter sounds to help them learn to read. I taught them how to sound out letters and to count syllables and C-V-C words. I I work in the Gwinnett County Public School System where I am teaching Kindergarten children to read, sounding out words as well as decoding words.
