The College of St. Catherine (Business)
St. Catherine University (Master's)
I have a Master's degree in Business, which I have utilized over my career. After leaving the corporate world, I decided to turn to substitute teaching, as I have come to appreciate the learning process over the years as the mother of five. I found that I love teaching students and even more, that I have a talent for discerning each student's style of learning. Not all students have the same best way of learning - some learn better when they understand why the subject is important and how it is relevant to them, some students are visual learners, etc. The best teachers I have had brought the subject matter to life for me and this is exactly how I teach my students.
My teaching experience has been with grade levels K-12 for the last two years as a substitute teacher. I have worked with all levels of student abilities - Advanced Placement, ESL/ELL, Special Education and mainstream classroom environments. I taught in public school systems as well as charter schools. On the elementary level, my teaching experience has been with the core disciplines of Mathematics, English, Literature, Social Studies and Science, as well as Art and Music. For middle school and high school classes, I have taught Science, Algebra and English/Language skills.
Philosophy has been one of my favorite subjects overall because it is at the very heart of our human moral development. Building on the works of the ancient philosophers and subsequent logicians throughout history, mankind continues to grow spiritually through its ability to think about the world we live in and our role in it.
As a lifelong, voracious reader, my English and writing skills have be honed through reading the works of Spinoza, Shakespeare, Descartes, Maugham and Steinbeck, to name just a few of the great authors throughout our history. Academically and professionally, the importance of proper English and composition cannot be understated.
As a professional with a Master's degree in Business, I have extensive experience in Marketing, Accounting, Sales and Management throughout my career.
The adage that we cannot know where we are going until we understand where we have been holds true. As Americans, I believe that in order to continue to grow in a positive direction as a nation, we must understand how our country began and its historical growth throughout the centuries. From basing our Constitution on the fundamentals of the Magna Carta to the present day society, knowing our contributions to the world as well as our mistakes will make this country stronger and more prepared to face the future. I have excelled in my American History studies in the academic setting and I still continue to study our history as a well informed citizen
I cannot draw stick figures. But my first exposure to Art History - Byzantine through Modern Eras as a sophomore led to a lifelong passion for art that literally refreshes my soul. The journey of understanding the processes built upon one another that brought artists from flat, one dimensional painting to realistic, three dimensional figures is one that also shows the ability of man to progress in critical thinking and enlightenment. This is the understanding of Art History that I bring to the student.
Teaching students on a one to one basis allows me to know the student for the person he/she is. I can build on their strengths and help them to believe in their abilities. I have a Master's degree in Business, which I have utilized over my career. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
