About Charity

I have taught and tutored in schools, day cares, churches, and sports organizations. I have both graduate and undergraduate degrees in music education. I am certified to teach in two different states and have taught in private, public, and charter schools. I offer you instruction in music theory and general music.

Preparing to major in music? Let me mentor you in theory, history, and college preparation. Wishing to include music in your homeschool curriculum? Here comes music reading, writing, listening, playing, improvising, and creating. I also integrate other disciplines like history and science into this music learning. We can combine siblings or have small groups all for the price of one session.

I also offer homework help in subjects such as ELA and math. I homeschooled a seventh grader for a semester and brought her from failing in most subjects to a 4.0 in all her classes. I train my students to develop problem-solving processes so they can become lifelong, independent learners. I push my kids to excel, yet not to the point that they dislike their work.

Thank you so much for reaching out to me as a tutor who will meet the needs of your family. Talk to you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I grew up in a Christian home and in churches all my life. I also attended a Christian university for my bachelors and masters degrees. I participate in my church's weekly ladies Bible study. Most importantly, I have learned basic hermeneutics, which is using Scripture to interpret Scripture in its original context.

Ear Training

I have both a bachelors and a masters degree in music education. I remember the stresses of college ear training classes, and I want to build your ear training skills in sight singing and dictation. We would start with basic melodies you already know by singing and signing them using solfege. Then we would write them down. We would also be doing exercises in rhythm, pitch, and harmony.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified by two states to teach using common core standards. I have two degrees in education. I have taught early childhood and elementary and junior high general music.

Flute

I have played flute for eleven years, and I was in band for seven years. I majored in music education, and my principal instrument was flute. I even gave a few recitals ranging from CPE Bach to Ian Clarke.

I can start a beginning student or support current flutists with their work in band, competitions, or personal improvement. We would work on ear training, improvisation, and technique.

General Music

I have both a bachelors and a masters degree in music education. I have taught early childhood and elementary and junior high general music. I will guide you in learning steady beat, reading and writing rhythm and pitch, improvising and creating, and understanding world cultures and music history. I can do one-on-one or small groups of siblings or friends.

Homeschool

I understand the homeschooling community because I was homeschooled from Pre-K through twelfth grade, and now I am involved with the homeschooling groups in my church. I realize there are as many ways of homeschooling as there are families that homeschool. As a certified teacher with two education degrees, I can assist homeschool parents in planning, finding resources, and getting their kids ready for graduation, college, and life.

I am here to support whatever schedule, curriculum, and learning style you find best for your children. I can be a learning coach for kids enrolled in online classes. I can also teach courses using textbooks, online resources, and the WyzAnt online lesson platform.

We can work on ELA, math, science, history, computer applications, or music. (Consult my WyzAnt certified subjects list.) In 2015 I homeschooled a seventh grader for a complete semester in her online school and brought her from failing all classes up to a 4.0 final grade.

You pay for my time, not the number of kids I teach. You can combine siblings or homeschooled friends in learning sessions and pay the same as if it were a on-one-one lesson.

Martial Arts

I have been in martial arts for nine years. I started in Washin-Ryu karate where I learned the power of stances, focus, and work ethic. I later moved to Atlanta and took up Choong-Sil Kwan Taekwondo. Here I improved my skills in sparring and forms. I have my black belt and teach in Lawrenceville.

I use the Drills for Skillz curriculum to guide students in training that is developmentally appropriate physically, emotionally, cognitively, and socially for my students. I especially focus on self defense and self discipline.

You pay for my time, not the number of students. We can often combine siblings or friends, and the group lesson costs the same as a private lesson.

Music History

I have both a bachelors and a masters degree in music education. If you have some specific content in mind, we can focus on that. Otherwise, we will walk from music of antiquity all the way to post-tonal and modern pop music.

I can support you in your current music history class or give you own personal course. We can work through a textbook or do everything online. I can assign homework if you want something extra intensive. We can do one-on-one or small groups of siblings or friends.

Soccer

I played soccer for eleven years. I played coed at first, and then in high school I played for a competitive girls team. My senior year we were undefeated.

I can help beginners hone their dribbling, kicking, and juggling skills. We can also work on understanding the FIFA rules on throw-ins, corner kicks, offsides, etc.

Swimming

I taught YMCA swimming lessons for five years. I worked with all ages, from baby classes on up to senior adults. I did group lessons and private one-on-ones.

My three learning goals for beginning swimmers is that they can be comfortable with 1) getting the face wet, floating on the back, and 3) treading water. There is no such thing as drown-proofing, but these three skills drastically improve a person's water safety.

I love working with beginners, even if they are fearful. I first earn my student's trust by not allowing anything uncomfortable to happen while he or she is with me. Then this trust allows the student to try new and daring things.

I also work with people who have special needs cognitively or physically. Call it casual water therapy! I even lifeguarded three years at a camp for adults and teenagers with special needs.

You pay for my time, not the number of students I help. You can combine with friends or siblings and still pay the same price as a one-on-one lesson.
