In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified elementary teacher with extensive experience in teaching reading, phonics, and comprehension. I have taught first grade, where phonics and learning to read were the most important part of the curriculum. I am familiar with the tests needed to help identify problems that struggling readers may have and have many resources to assist with those problems and realize the importance of making it fun, for example, sight word games.
For older students having trouble with comprehension my third grade experience teaching in small groups gives me a lot of ways to provide help in that area.
I have experience teaching phonics using Saxon Phonics to first graders and realize the importance of students knowing the sounds of the individual letters as well as the blends. If they do not get a good background in phonics, they may have trouble all through out school with reading and spelling. I use different methods to teach, depending on the child's needs. They will benefit from using as many senses as they can to learn, as well as enjoy the learning games that can make it more interesting.
