I have over 45 years of teaching experience in various countries. I taught all subjects in grades K-6, as well as high school equivalency courses and English to speakers of other languages to adult groups. My teaching goals are always to support learners in achieving success in positive and fun ways. I strive to provide instruction that is clear and meaningful to the learners, always checking for understanding and presenting information in a variety of ways to maximize learning.
My education degree included courses in the teaching of reading. I love to tutor; because I can extend my full attention to the student's specific needs and learning style. I can plan targeted instruction to accelerate learning. Tutor and student are able to work cooperatively on targets making adjustments in real time without affecting other learners. For the past 10 years I have tutored elementary students as well as adults in reading, phonics, writing, math, and English. My student's teachers have reported remarkable increase in their performance on tests and grade level attainment. Ninety-five percent of the adults that I tutored who had goals of passing the High School Equivalency exam achieved the goal within one to two years.
English is my first language. My love for writing poetry and prose has motivated me to develop a vast Vocabulary to make my writings interesting.
As a teacher of early childhood and elementary education, I had to develop expertise in teaching Phonics. Over the years, I have completed many workshops and training in the teaching of Phonics. My early teacher training at the Bethlehem Teachers' College in Jamaica was heavily focused on learning strategies to teach phonics which was a separate subject area taught every day in the elementary schools at that time. In recent years, I provided guidance to parents, and instruction to children in areas of Phonemic and Phonological Awareness.
I had the opportunity to provide guidance in a family literacy program where parents and children were learning together. Lack of basic study skills were observed to be a big obstacle in completing assignments and performing well on tests. During this time I researched and study various strategies to help the families identify, understand and develop functional study skills.
I have the expertise, training and experience to be an effective tutor. If you need a tutor to help you succeed in learning; increasing your grades and test scores, I encourage you to contact me to learn more about what I have to offer. I will be delighted to schedule tutoring sessions for you. I have over 45 years of teaching experience in various countries. A few months ago I hired Zane to work with my ADHD, OCD & ODD 7-year-old grandson who is in his IEP program in 1st grade. He was reading on level, but I was worried that he could easily fall behind due to his inability to stay on task. Due to my hectic schedule at work and now rising my grandson, it was hard for me to spend the extra time he needs to stay on grade level.
When I hired Zane, I was really worried that I would be wasting my money becasue at the end of the day his ADHD meds have worn off and he has a hard time sitting still. Zane came up with some word games for him to play that he finds fun which keep him engaged and learning. I can tell a Hugh difference in his ability to read and now he is contently asking me: “Nana, what that word”.
My goal was for my grandson to learn to love to read and I think we are well on our way in making that happen. Thank you so much Zane.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an elementary teacher, I had to teach handwriting as one of my responsibilities. During my 25 years of teaching Pre-K through third grade, I taught students handwriting skills, print, cursive D'Nealian forms. I provided penmanship instruction to large and small groups of students as well to individuals.
I have taught phonics to children in grades 1 to 3 for over 15 years. As an Even Start educator for eight years, I was involved in the development and implementation of phonological and Phonemic awareness lessons to improve the reading skills of children and ESOL learners. My college degree in Education (N-6) included a course in the teaching of phonics as an independent subject area. It also included teaching reading that incorporated the phonetic method.
My education degree included courses in the teaching of reading. Throughout my career, I have also participated in various workshops addressing strategies in teaching reading. As an elementary school teacher for over eighteen years, I have experienced great success in getting my students to become excellent readers. I volunteered for eight years in the Even Start Program to tutor elementary students with low literacy that were performing below grade level. At the end of one year the students that I tutored increased their reading performance 1-3 grade levels.
I have taught and tutored elementary students and their parents study skills throughout the 35 years of my career as an educator. My experience teaching these skills provided me with invaluable insight in customizing instruction bases on student's unique abilities, experiences and situations. The SOAR Study Skills system is a tool that I refer to for guidance in strategies that proved to be successful in teaching study skills.
As an elementary teacher over the years, my plan included daily vocabulary instruction. I believe a strong vocabulary is essential in developing an excellent reader. Research in vocabulary instruction can inform planning and delivery of vocabulary instruction.
I am a retired elementary teacher but have over 10 years experience working with high school and GED students in reading and writing. I wrote intensively, grant proposals, curriculum development state and national presentations in my previous employment. I also tutored my grandson in college essay writing.
