Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I taught Common Core Subjects, Reading and Math in Gwinnett County. As a gifted teacher, I instructed students in grades 1 through 5.
Reading- I frequently infused the Common Core Exemplary Poetry Titles for all grades 1-5; Students were able to grasp grammar and language concepts such as subject verb agreement and figurative language. Students responded with parody verses. Students recited the poems to increase fluency and expression. Chapter books and novel were selected based upon student interest. Higher level questioning, performing arts, journaling, debates and performance-tasks were included.
Math - Integration of hands-on manipulatives to match the standards, interactive notebooks, questioning and discussion are effective strategies. Students are asked to show math in a concrete, pictorial and abstract way to heed complete understanding of concepts.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 18 years' experience teaching mainly grades 2 through 5-all subjects.
I taught gifted, ESOL and STEM in grades K-5. Tutoring methods include building hands-on learning and critical thinking skills.
Reading- I taught phonics, pre-reading and reading skills using the balanced reading approach. This includes diagnosing and pre-assessing students' strength and weakness; forming guided reading groups with flexible homogeneous and heterogeneous groups. Students frequently moved back and forth based upon their needs. Students were aware of their progress based upon their formative and summative assessments. I integrated various strategies such as performing arts, debating, journaling and inquiry.
Math- I taught Math in Guided Math Groups using the same procedure that I did with Guided Reading. I pre-assessed and students' strength and weakness; forming guided math groups with flexible homogeneous and heterogeneous arrangements. Students frequently moved back and forth based upon their needs. Students were aware of their progress based upon their formative and summative assessments. I integrated various strategies such as questioning, performance-based projects, interactive notebooks, and inquiry.
Science-I frequently integrated science with literacy by tying in poetry, writing and pairing non-fiction w/ fictional titles to balance the concept; I merged performing arts with science concepts. Students frequently had a performance-task to complete at the end of a unit. I infused STEM design briefs or a STEM task to further engage students.
Social Studies- I infused social studies with literacy. There were many opportunities to use performing arts to re-enact historical events. Each year I sought to include a fall and spring performance for students to share their knowledge with the grade level. Various other strategies such as poetry, debate, writing and pairing of non-fiction and fictional titles in Guided Reading.

Handwriting

I taught handwriting in 2nd and 3rd grades for 5 years. I am familiar with D'Nealian and Zaner Bloser. I've also had exposure to accommodations for special needs students using tactile methods to increase finger dexterity and fine motor skills.

Phonics

I trained 3000 teachers throughout the southeastern region on phonemic awareness, phonics and reading skills. I was a local school and district expert for acquiring early literacy skills. Teaching methods and strategies were successful and well-received by students.
