About Rhonie

I have a love for learning as well as seeing "the light come on" in others as they grasp a new concept or idea for the first time. I am a graduate cum laude from the University of West Georgia with a degree in Special Education. I also have an Associates degree in Fashion Design. I have lived overseas in the Netherlands and have traveled extensively, which has given me a love for people and other cultures. I completed a 2-year program through Kennesaw State University for professional development of elementary teachers of Math and Science, and in the area of middle grades Earth Science. In my years as a school teacher, I have worked with students with varying intellectual and learning disabilities, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I enjoy re-framing concepts that need to be understood by breaking them down to be more easily grasped. Some areas I can tutor in are Elementary Math, Science, Social Studies, sewing, and cooking.
I prefer to tutor from my home in Kennesaw, or I can come to you if special circumstances make it necessary. I require a 24-hour cancellation notice.
Let me get to know you and find out if I can help you in your learning needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have a degree in Special Education, specializing in adapted curriculum. Those with ADD/ADHD need a certain type of calming environment, which is something I provide with my soft-spoken, gentle way of communicating.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My college degree is in Special Education, specializing in adapted curriculum. I was the teacher for 4 years for students with mild to severe intellectual disabilities, where many of these students were also on the Autism Spectrum. I have also worked with students that range from high functioning to severe autism, including those who are non-verbal.

Bible Studies

I have led and been a part of in-depth bible studies for about 12 years. I was a missionary for almost 17 years before that. Through various trainings within the mission, at my church, and in the Spiritual Life Coaching I was a part of for almost 3 years, I have a real passion for people understanding the Bible.

Cooking

I have taught nutritional cooking in my classroom at various times over the last 9 years. In the last 5 years I have gained more experience with organic and whole food nutrition as cooking, and have assisted my Chiropractor in cooking demonstrations during workshops. I love to help people know what to look for on package labels and how to shop effectively. Teaching others how to make healthy and delicious food is a passion of mine!

Dyslexia

I went through a Wilson Reading System 3 day training and used it with my students. Some of the students I teach presently have dyslexia and we use the concepts while not teaching the exact program on an ongoing basis. A number of my clients have come to me for reading help due to having dyslexia, and their teachers and parents are seeing improvements very quickly.

Elementary (K-6th)

In the 9 years that I have been teaching and the 6 years of substitute teaching, I have had to teach Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Vocational and Life Skills, and Cooking to students of all ages and ability levels, but mostly those with disabilities. My certification is in all the areas for Special Ed. adapted curriculum P-12 Consultative, as well as Special Ed. General Curriculum P-12 Consultative. Each subject area is for P-5, 4-8, including Reading.

Elementary Math

I have certification in math for grades P-8 for adapted curriculum and have been a part of ongoing teacher's training for math and science teachers through KSU, which has added many more creative tools to my repertoire.

Elementary Science

I completed a two year program at Kennesaw State University for teachers to enhance their teaching of Math and Science. The content was geared specifically towards the 3rd-5th grade standards, but most Science subjects get repeated, just in more depth as the student progresses through school. The program I am in now is for 6th grade Earth Science. I love teaching/tutoring with a hands-on approach so the student gets involved with the materials and gets to investigate.

Nutrition

I have most recently completed the Institute of Nutritional Leadership where I studied various types of diets and how they effect our body's healing in regard to Thyroid issues, Leaky Gut, and other auto immune issues, as well as weight loss. I have also been assisting individuals with reducing their inflammation through getting rid of the toxins in their bodies, environment, and even their thoughts. The use of essential oils can also play an important part in how effectively our bodies function and supporting our immune system. I would love to share the experience I have with individuals who are looking to improve their health and well-being via face to face or Skype consultations and check-ins as well as, shopping trips, or even cooking together! My rate for nutritional coaching is $60 per hour, and $45 for other academic tutoring.

Phonics

Phonics is the basis for all our reading skills! With having gone through the basic Wilson Reading System training, I have been able to help a number of young readers improve their skills through the step by step methodology presented in this reading system. I love seeing students go from being frustrated and greatly disliking reading, to enjoying it and asking to do it first!

Reading

I have a state certification to teach reading as well as my qualification test which was passed with 100% accuracy.

Sewing

I have an Associate's Degree in Fashion Design from 1978. I have sewn and designed costumes for plays and have taught one of my daughters to sew. I have had wonderful times with students who have never even touched a sewing machine before, be proud of their creations and look forward to their next projects. I am able to instruct/coach beginners as they start out, and see them through their projects, including giving them advice on types of fabrics to use, styles that work for them, what might be too difficult to tackle as a beginning project, etc.

Special Needs

My college degree is in Special Education, specializing in adapted curriculum. I was the teacher for 4 years for students with mild to severe intellectual disabilities, many on the Autism Spectrum. I have also taught those with Anxiety disorder, OCD, Dyslexia, Language disorders and a variety of physical disabilities as well.
