Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught children in public schools for thirty years. I am certified to teach PreK to fifth grade. I have been a tutor for the past 3 years. My clients have met or exceeded their maximum potential after receiving rigorous instruction from lessons I created that utilized a variety of teaching strategies and styles.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I taught math to third grade students for seven years. Presently, I work as GOALS Academy instructor for 5th grade students.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

I have taught elementary students for the past 30 years. During this time I have had to teach Kindergarten students the proper way to hold a pencil/crayon and the correct formation of letters for their names and words using Zaner-Bloser. Since cursive handwriting is a common core standard for third grade, I have taught cursive writing for the past 5 years. I have used both Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian. For the kindergartners and third graders, I have them trace letters that I had previously made and form words after watching me model the proper way to write them. The last three years, I used Youtube lesson to make handwriting formation more interesting.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have a taught phonics in a public school for thirty years while teaching kindergarten through third grade. Even though my last six years were spent teaching third graders, I did have some students who were performing below grade level and needed some phonics foundational skills. During this time, I taught letter sound recognition, short/long vowel sounds, phonemic awareness of CVC and CVC(silent e), CVVC, r controlled sounds, digraphs, diphthongs, blending letter sounds and word parts to pronounce new words, and chunking larger words into smaller word parts. I also used rhyming words and Dolch word list to increase the students' reading vocabulary.
Reading,

Reading

I have 30 years of teaching experience in the public school system. I have 3 years experience tutoring. All students were behind academically, but by the end of the school year, they were on grade level for reading.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

As a third grade instructor for the past six years, I had my students keep a note taking notebook. I also gave them graphic organizers to help them with their comprehension of skills/concepts taught. Prior to giving tests, I would have the students to use their notes and graphic organizers to complete fill in the blank sentences and outlines. By doing this my students experienced success on the quizzes/assessments that were given in class.
