My name is Juanita P., and I'm very passionate about helping others to think and learn. My journey started eighteen years ago at George Washington Carver Middle School where I taught 7th/8th special education. I also taught at McDonogh #32 Elementary School and William J. Guste Elementary School in New Orleans, La., respectively. My duties included teaching students, writing lesson plans and informally and formally assessing students' progress.
Most of my tenure comes from teaching at Walter L. Cohen Senior High School, where I specialized in teaching Reading and English. I taught at Cohen seven years before I relocated to Atlanta, Ga., after Hurricane Katrina.
In addition to teaching, I was also the drama club sponsor for 5 years. I wrote original plays and even put on a talent show where the winners won awards. This type of extracurricular activity is something that I have always enjoyed, and I took advantage of every opportunity to put on a production where students could express themselves through drama, poetry and rap.
I continued my tenure at Forest Park High School where I taught British Literature, World Literature and Literature and Composition. I was also the Drama Club sponsor at this school for two years.
When anyone asks me what is my favorite thing about being a teacher, I can honestly say that it's positively interacting with the students. It will always be about the students as long as God allows me to educate, mold and motivate young people. For example, a good day for me is when I'm teaching a concept, difficult or moderately rigorous, and I see enlightenment in their (the students') eyes. The light bulbs in their minds have become brighter. That makes my day. I want students' light bulbs to become brighter after I have helped them. I want students to challenge themselves more than they are doing. In order to compete in this increasingly competitive world, young people today need to become better at reading, writing and using technology. I want to help students assert themselves and improve their skills. Teaching is my passion.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have certification in Upper Elementary Education teaching grades 5th and 6th.
This certification is from Louisiana.
I also received training working with pre-K students at a daycare center.
Students will receive reinforcement on how to correct forms of grammar.
Students will receive help on analyzing components of literature such as theme, plot and irony.
Students will receive help typing a research paper or report for school.
As a tutor, I will carefully show students how to read their research paper or report for school.
Students need to expand their vocabulary skills. Dictionaries will be provided and used during the sessions.
Since writing is such a dominant part of the new common core curriculum, I expect a lot of students to seek assistance in writing. Informal assessments using real life situations will be assigned as reinforcements. A weekly log will be used to monitor students' success.
