Bio

I teach American History and World Civilizations at the post-secondary level in both face-to-face and online courses. I prefer post 1500-World Civ because of the focus on the post WWII industrialization and globalization processes that take place there. I believe that there is a basic body of knowledge that all world citizens must share if we are to develop a civilized and equitable society. I also believe that the most exciting thing about history is the story - not the memorization of dates and names. My early specialization was in Native American history and culture, and later focused on the history of the Appalachian region and the role of the arts and handcrafts in local economic development. A bit odd for historian perhaps, but more interesting. My studies in education have taught me that the most essential skill is to listen to your students, find them where they are, and design teaching materials focused on their own abilities and perspectives.

In addition, I am an extensive gardener and have an interest in medicinal plants and herbal lore. I am an accomplished ceramic artist (potter) and have practiced nearly every form of the needle arts there are. I have set the wonderful world of tatting and lacemaking as my next area of interest.
