I spent 8 years teaching high school math, from Algebra to Calculus, before leaving education and entering the business world. I miss teaching every day, and tutoring allows me to still teach math occasionally and help kids succeed in a subject that I love.

I scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT while in high school, and then majored in mathematics at Duke University. Along the way, I tutored my peers in various math classes and SAT preparation. As a math teacher, I was fortunate to teach the most advanced math students at the high school level. But I also taught Algebra I every year, as I wanted to make sure that those students, who may have been turned off by math early in their schooling, could succeed in something that is truly necessary for their future. I still use math every day in my job, and have tutored several students since leaving teaching.

My tutoring philosophy is the same as it was in my classroom. In order to learn math, students need to be exposed to a clear explanation of the subject, with several examples. Then they need lots and lots of practice. Each daily topic fits into the big picture of Algebra or of Geometry, and students need to see that big picture as well. If they take each lesson as a separate entity, it doesn't make sense.

Unfortunately, there are lots of math teachers out there that are not enthusiastic about the subject, and that are just going through the motions, repeating lessons that they have taught for many years. I was not this kind of teacher when I was in the classroom, and I am not that kind of tutor now. I have a passion for math, and my enthusiasm shows when I teach.

Calculus,

Calculus

I like to teach Calculus using technology of today, but with a historical perspective as well. Many of the topics should be covered the old-school way with an emphasis on rigor and practice, without relying on the calculator to do all the work. Only then can one truly appreciate the Eureka moment that many of the calculus techniques allow you to experience. I have a BS in math from Duke, taught for 8 years both in Virginia and Gwinnett, and now work in a profession in which I use math every day.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I taught pre-calculus for 8 years in the public schools, both in Virginia and in Gwinnett County. I enjoy teaching it because it is the bridge to calculus, and you get to glimpse at some of the topics that you will tackle in calculus. It is very important to understand the concepts early in the course--you do not want to fall behind.

I taught trigonometry for 8 years in the public schools, both in Virginia and in Gwinnett County. I enjoy teaching it because it is the beginning of the bridge from algebra and geometry to calculus, combining elements of all topics. It is very important to understand the concepts early in the course--you do not want to fall behind. I believe trig should be taught as it was years ago, with an emphasis on rigor and the concepts, and not RELYING on the calculator. Technology should be used as a tool and as a time-saver, but it does not replace the necessity to learn how to do trigonometry--those who take shortcuts will be missing out when they get to calculus.

Mr. D is the best!

We found him when I was pretty much failing precalculus, and was very behind in the topics that I needed to know. he is incredibly patient and non-intimidating, which helps if math is not your strong suit. By going to his math tutoring, my grades and math confidence has increased exponentially.

Great Tutor! Patient and extremely knowledgeable!

Steven helped my daughter with Algebra II. He was friendly and very patient helping my 16 year old daughter (she is very shy). My daughter really felt like the hour of tutoring helped a lot! We know we will be calling him again! Thank you!
