About Michael

I have been a tutor for over eight years. During that time I have tutored students ranging from elementary school to college level. I graduated from college Summa Cum Laude with a 3.98 majoring in literature, history and minoring in math and science. The students that I have tutored have not just been able to raise their overall grade by at least one letter grade, but have also gained a remarkable amount of confidence in said areas of study. I have had first hand experience drawings lesson plans, creating tests, and giving lectures.

My tutoring methods are built around three things critical thinking, conceptual mastery, and pacing. When I say critical thinking I don't mean difficult thinking, that's what teachers do. Critical thinking does not involve finding the most difficult math problem, the longest scientific formula, or the most obscure historic fact or reference. It is most certainly not nitpicking critical thinking is being able to be aware of what a student is learning. In other words I tutor students to do more than find the answer. Conceptual mastery answers the question all students ask, "Why do I need to know that?" Conceptual mastery allows me to show students how to use acquired knowledge outside the scope of a lesson plan . Overall I teach students how to learn multidimensionally and see patterns in the real world. The most important tool I tutor with is pacing. I will work as long and as hard as a student until they understand the material.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have taught English privately for over seven years. I have also served as an assistant professor in English, a reviewer and editor of research papers and thesis, placed in a number of writing contests, and have been attended and featured in writing symposiums. My range of tutoring stretches from children in school to adults looking for work.

Reading

I have been tutoring children in reading informally (without pay) for 10 years. I have been an honoree in a number of literary symposiums. I have served as an assistant professor, guest lecturer and peer-reviewer while in college.
