Gordon State College (History- Education)
Columbus State University (Master's)
My name is Justin. Thank you for considering me for your tutoring needs. I know from experience that finding the right tutor can be a difficult process. I use the term process because finding the right tutor may take time. Many “tutors” possess the content knowledge but do not have the patience, skillset, or pedagogical ability to convey that understanding to a student. I consider myself a lifetime learner and enjoy helping others succeed.
I began my career in education as a student of history-education at Gordon State College. While attending the college, I was asked to tutor as a supplemental instructor of history. This experience only furthered my desire to be a teacher. After graduating, I began my career teaching middle grades social studies and Language Arts. The experience has been truly rewarding. Teaching allows me the ability to work students and see them grow academically as time progresses. While classroom time is great, I have always enjoyed helping students one-on-one. This time allows me to get to know the student and tailor instruction to fit her/his own unique needs. One-on-one time also allows me to work with reading within the student’s personal lexile level. I have worked with the county’s after-school program as a reading/writing tutor since I began my career with the school system.
In my opinion, the ability to read and write fluently is the cornerstone to all learning. I have taught a variety of subjects including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Language Arts. As a Language Arts teacher, I successfully taught many students how to use appropriate reading and writing strategies. It has been my experience that students often lack the knowledge of key directional vocabulary words. This lack of vocabulary may also hinder their ability to understand question being asked. I have also worked with after-school tutoring programs specializing in reading and writing. Once a student has gains the ability to read and write at or above grade level, academic growth is inevitable. Let me put my experience to work for you!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
