I am a retired chemist with a career in R/D including management. I have a PhD in Polymer Science as an elastomer physical chemist. I am a published chemist and a lecturer at the graduate school level. I am certified to teach science and mathematics in Ohio, was a "preferred substitute teacher" in two school districts in NE Ohio, and have tutored and taught science and mathematics in high school and middle school in Ohio for 9 years and since 2009 in Georgia. In my experience tutoring chemistry and mathematics, a 2-hour lesson is preferred over a 1-hour lesson to better accomplish understanding of the assignment. I also prefer to know ahead of time the assignment topic so I can review my personal textbooks and bring appropriate background material to the lesson.
For mathematics and chemistry, the tutoring normally involves completing problem sets, and the optimum tutoring lesson is a face-to-face meeting where assigned problems are solved, with the objective not only to get the correct answer but to explain the principles employed to enhance understanding of the topic. However, I have found that a telephone or email based lesson can be equally productive. If this is useful, I am willing to conduct lessons this way also. Mike has always been prompt since his first lesson. He is very patient with my daughter; especially since she was not knowledgeable in basic math principles that public school had not taught her. The best review I can give is from my daughter after her first lesson she said, "He REALLY knows his stuff!" He has ignited a desire for her to learn math...which is HUGE! We highly recommend Mike for his strong teaching ability!
Mr. Mike did an excellent job explaining the math concepts my son was having difficulty understanding. He displayed a confidence in his Math abilities that I haven't seen in a while.
Mr. Mike tutors my two sons in Chemistry. My youngest is in the 10th grade and my oldest is a junior at Georgia State University. They both said he teaches Chemistry better than their teachers. They get a lot done with him and they understand it.
He was able to explain angles to my son in a way that was easy for him to understand. He was very prompt. We look forward to working with him again.
The first session I listened as my daughter was real quiet at first, as Mike explained things about chemistry, the light went on and she became more and more enthusiastic and was getting problems correct with out any coaching. Well worth our money to have Mike turn on her excitement for a subject.
My daughter took her first lesson with Mr. Mike and she was very impressed. Mike is very knowledgeable and he really knows the subject. She is very happy.
My son says he really got a lot out of his first session so we will continue to meet with Mike. He was on time, very professional and very patient. We appreciate you Mike!
Mr. Mike was patient with our son and explained in ways he understood. It was his first time with him and we will see what happens in the next few weeks.
Mike is a great teacher and helped my son greatly with both algebra two and chemistry. He was punctual and patient.
Mike has been great and helped my daughter so much. She has improved significantly. May have to get help with statistics in a few semesters!
My daughter was really happy after her session today. She finished the rest of her assignments without a problem. Really great tutor.
Mike is great, I will continue to work with him throughout pre-calculus and possibly in an upcoming physical science college course. He arrived early and jumped right into the material. I am happy I found him to tutor me. I had a 78 overall with an upcoming exam worth 40% of my overall grade. Math is not my best subject and I tried to utilize the tutoring services at the university, but with all the people in attendance, it was difficult to gain one-on-one time.
I would recommend him for any subject he tutors in because he really seams to care and enjoy teaching.
My experience with Mike has been great. His instruction and teaching strategies are extremely beneficial. My grade has improved and I've also been understanding my class work thoroughly.
Mike is wonderful! Highly recommended for any student seeking assistance in math. Thank you for all you do, Mike.
My son was able to quickly grasp Mike's teaching methods as they were simple and to the point. We admire his ability to translate difficult information into manageable bites.
Mike is cognitive of the student's needs and steers the student through the learning process by helping resolve the higher risk needs of understanding by having the student work from the basics to the difficult; therefore the student is learning more thoroughly as she learns each step while progressing toward the resolution. This is a good process and repetitive application ensures the student will know the algebra for the long term.
Mike does an excellent job helping my son with his Algebra 1. Am always pleased and have seen progress in my sons grades.
Mike was fantastic with our 13 y/o daughter, helping her to bolster her match skills for the SAT. His logical, methodical approach to problem solving is a fantastic skill set that our daughter greatly benefited from.
Very patient and knowledgeable. I'm a nontraditional student learning Chemistry 2 and Mike has clarified how to set up and solve each equation. He takes his time to explain, every process to solving a problem.
My son has been resistant to the whole tutoring experience & Mike hung in there & now I believe my son has overcome his resistance! Mike has helped pick up Jacob's grade 20+ pts this semester. He has been awesome.
I was looking for a tutor for my 16-year old sister, who's studying for the PSAT. She wanted to meet with someone to work on the Math section, so that she would feel more confident taking the test. I was very impressed with Mr. A from his WyzAnt page, he looked professional, thorough, and capable. He responded quickly to my initial email, and we set up her first lesson.
These were my sister's comments about the lesson:
I was really impressed that he was on time.
He was really prepared. He went over any problems I didn't understand several times, and tried different ways to help me understand.
He had great, positive energy.
He asked questions to make sure I understood.
He made me take lots of notes.
He didn't rush me or get frustrated.
He used real life examples for solving equations.
I really liked him, and I feel really good about the Math section now.
I can't wait to meet with him again for schoolwork!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
