My focus when teaching was primarily with middle school students and subjects. As an SEC teacher I successfully worked with students having learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, autism, dyslexia, OHI, and other issues. My focus now as a retired teacher is to help students struggling with reading, writing, and spelling to gain lost ground.
I have a Master's in Special Education. I use a multi-sensory approach to aid in students recovering that lost ground. Most dyslexic students start falling through the cracks between elementary and middle school and it becomes more pronounced in middle school. The studies show that the earlier the intervention occurs the better the chance of actually catching up in their reading, writing, and spelling skills. However, it is not a fast process as early skills must be repeated to some degree. All students must take a pre-assessment before being admitted in the class to assure that they are ready and able to learn the material.
All of my teaching experience has been with special needs populations. Middle school subject content areas are Earth Science, and Georgia Studies. Current focus is on dyslexic readers. I have patience, persistence, and will persevere to help students learn.
Tutoring openings are Tuesday through Thursday before 3 p.m. in the summers. Sessions will be 30 to 40 minutes depending on the student with one on one tutoring for dyslexia. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
