I am an experienced music teacher with over 20 years of teaching in the subject. I currently teach part time at the University of North Georgia. I have an extensive background in teaching voice and piano, and I enjoy watching my students grow.
It is very fulfilling to develop relationships with students from whom I learn a lot as well as dispense a lot of learning. I find it to be extremely rewarding and to watch the growth of the students as we work together.
I have three degrees and wrote a dissertation. Having done these things, I have had to learn how to write well. I require my students in music appreciation to write papers, and I have learned from their writing errors how to help others write better.
Voice and piano were emphases in my undergraduate degree. I taught voice professionally for about 17 years in academia and have a private studio now.
I have had several piano students recently, and I have found that my piano abilities enable me to help beginning and intermediate students make significant progress in learning how to play the piano. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I passed undergraduate piano proficiency as a music major in college in one semester. I then took four semesters of private applied piano in undergraduate school and made an A in three semesters and a B in one semester.
As a conductor, it is extremely important to play through the pieces I conduct, and I do this with regularity. I have taught several piano students with the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures curriculum, and it has proven to be an excellent tool in advancing their piano abilities.
My undergraduate music major included voice as my principle instrument. I was on the vocal honors program at Samford and was allowed to do a public recital as a result.
I studied voice on the masters and doctoral level with great success, though it was not my primary emphasis. In each case, I was academically successful.
I have been a choral conductor and private applied voice teacher for over 20 years with great success professionally.
