About Becky

Supported by a Masters degree in Adult Education from the University of Georgia, adult students are my specialty.

For the past seven years, I've taught English to business professionals at all levels of English ability and business responsibility. These courses included presentation skills, email and report writing, teleconference communication skills as well as general business vocabulary, grammar and cultural relations.

Prior to that, I taught academic and immigrant English for 5 years. During this time, I taught courses in grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening and reading in intensive English programs. Also, I tutored students who were working toward their U.S. citizenship test. In addition, I designed and taught ESL courses in the continuing education department at Clayton State University and in the short-term summer program at Georgia Tech.

I would love to work with Atlanta area residents who are seeking to improve their English skills for whatever reason.

Oh, by the way, I recently studied Chinese so I really do understand the difficulties of learning and using another language. I'd count it a privilege to help you accomplish your goals of learning English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

While attending two different church-affiliated universities, I studied the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible both as literature and as God's story of His work in our world. I have approximately 20 hours of university credits of this type.

In addition, I have actively participated in Christian apologetics programs for the past 20 years or so.

I've also developed and taught a number of Bible study courses. Several years ago, I rewrote in modern English a well-known and commonly referenced book by Andrew Murray - "With Christ in the School of Prayer".

Phonics

From 2003 to present, I've taught pronunciation skills to non-native English speakers including French, Chinese, Spanish, Korean, and others.

I've researched and used a variety of helpful texts including: "Ship or Sheep", "American English Pronunciation", "Pronunciation Success" and "Pronunciation Pairs" among others.

I've taught one-on-one and in group settings with successful outcomes.

Public Speaking

For the past seven years, I've been teaching Business English in Taiwan, and many of my students did presentations in meetings, teleconferences, and seminars. I assisted them in preparing slides and scripts that were acceptable and appropriate in an English speaking context. I also worked with them on body language, effective use of the voice, opening and closing comments, persuasive language, and many other aspects of good public speaking.
