Auburn Montgomery (AUM) (Psychology)
I grew up in Colorado, where I qualified as a National Merit Scholar in high school, and began my college career at age 14. After I left home I lived in several different countries for extended periods of time - over a year in Mexico, Russia, and Ireland, as well as traveled extensively across Europe. Because of my travels I am fluent in Spanish, as well as semi-conversant in Russian (with very little Irish, Italian, and French to boot!). I taught English as a second language in both Russia and Mexico, and also taught Spanish once I returned to the United States. I have taught and tutored many subjects in a wide variety of settings - and worked with a very diverse spectrum of students, children and adults.
Most recently I spend several years in Selma, Alabama working with at-risk youth - teaching, mentoring, training, and inspiring them to rise above their circumstances and make a way for themselves! I also work extensively with children with autism, implementing a variety of methods to engage and teach them (ABA, Floortime, Son-Rise, etc). This year I moved to Fayetteville, Georgia, and am currently working in the Fayette County school system as a Title I instructor, as well as tutoring a group of high school students to take the ACT. I am very patient, and sensitive to each person's individual learning style - and I believe that anyone can learn anything, with the right support and motivation!
I have taught English as a second language in many different settings, to both children and adults, individually and in group settings. I have a very firm grasp of the grammar and all the idiosyncrasies of the English language, and all the ways it is similar to as well as different from other languages. I also have a particular talent for breaking down the correct pronunciation of each letter sound and word, and teaching it effectively.
I am fluent in Spanish, and I love the language - love speaking it and teaching it! I have a very practical approach, as well as many tips and strategies to get you speaking as quickly as possible.
Please contact me if you need tutoring in any subject - I would love to provide the extra support that's needed to help you succeed in whatever you set your mind to. I promise that you will benefit hugely from it - so schedule a lesson today! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am currently teaching a high school ACT class right now - coaching students individually on how to get their best scores possible. This is a test that CAN be coached (despite the ACT's protestations to the contrary) and having someone explain the concepts and teach the specific test-taking strategies can make all the difference in the world.
I have years of experience teaching English as a second language - I taught in Moscow, Russia and in Mexico City, Mexico. I have also taught English in the US, both in the classroom and outside of it. I have the ability to break it down and make it very understandable to my students, so there is absolutely zero comprehension gap.
I scored a 1400 on the SAT when I was in high school, because my math was a little weak (my English score was a perfect 800). Since then, my knowledge has only grown, as well as my skill at passing on that knowledge. A solid background in psychology also gives me a teaching edge, to understand each student and know how to reach her/him most effectively.
I lived in Mexico City for a year and a half, and since then have accrued much more experience as a translator and teacher. I have a near-native grasp of the grammar and spoken feel of the language, as well as a passion and love for it!
My vocabulary skills are unparalleled. Plus, I have some great tips and tricks for being able to learn and remember those pesky vocabulary words that you may not use too often.
I have extensive experience writing for many purposes - in both the MLA and APA formats, as well as creative writing and professional writing. I am also very skilled at editing, and can provide help organizing, rephrasing, enlivening, and enriching all types of writing. Writing should be clear, concise, consistent, and compelling - and I can teach you how to do it!
