I have a love for teaching and learning. I taught school for 25 years. I began my career working at the University of Chicago Lab. Schools. Over the years I have taught from pre-k through high school and adult education.
I recently retired. After retiring I missed working with students. Now I have decided to tutor and again do the work that I love so much. I look forward to meeting and working with both parents, children, and students of all ages.
My belief is that learning is a life long journey. Everyone should develop a love for learning. I am here to offer my services, as a guide, along the road to developing your love for learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher with a master's degree in k-8 education. I have taught for 25 years in grades from pre-k through high school, and adult education.
Phonics is the ability to identify the sounds associated with letters of the alphabet. Phonics is also understanding the sounds letters make when they are blended together, to form words. I have taught phonics in elementary school for well over 20 years. Starting in pre-school with phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and identify sounds.) In kindergarten I taught letter sounds and blending letters to make words. In the upper grades I taught decoding new words, vocabulary, spelling, fluency and comprehension.
I worked as a Reading Specialist for over 11 years. I have taught E.I.P. Reading for over 5 years in my school district. I have a Master's Degree in K-8 Education with a B.A. major in Reading and Language.
Study skills are the approaches used to learn and retain information on a subject. There are many methods used in study skills. For example: Mind Mapping, Brainstorming, Memorization
These methods can vary in usefulness with the grade levels. However, in the 20 plus years that I taught K-8 and adult education, I have used all the above mentioned skills to teach my students how to practice new information as well as study for a quiz or major test.
