About Lynda

I am a servant leader enthusiastic about tutoring young people for school, life skills, or personal enrichment. I have worked in the customer service industry, served 20 years in the Army in Preventive Medicine and Military Intelligence, and currently volunteer with the free ESL program at the Columbia County Library.

I bring organization, focus, creativity, and enthusiasm to any tutoring session. I offer uncommon clarity for ESL students; bridging cultures to enable life-long learning. I offer diverse perspectives having traveled the world; making each tutoring session a fresh opportunity for both book knowledge and world wisdom.

Student must bring school issued text/workbook materials and homework assignments to tutoring sessions. If student owns a laptop, iPad, or similar technology, please also bring to session.

My graduate degree is in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University -Teacher's College. Diversity is to be celebrated and Teamwork held in high esteem. I am a strong listener, communicator, and instructor with both individuals and groups.

Cooking is easy and instinctual for me. I can share the basics needed for healthy eating, or small event home entertaining.

1 year college art from Florida State University. Can offer opportunities to practice drawing, expand creativity, or refine current style.

Your time is precious. My lifetime of experience and personable manner will maximize your hours.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am fully familiar with ACT English methods for success. I assisted my own 7th grader to prepare for the ACT English through the DUKE talent search program.

Am fully familiar with ACT Math methods for success. Assisted my own 7th grader to prepare for the ACT, minus Writing, through the DUKE talent search program.

ACT Reading

American History

Between AP American History in High School, Classes on US Military History taught on site at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, NY, and years of the board game Trivial Pursuit, I can assist with the memorization and understanding of this nation's history that continues to be written today.

ASVAB

I took the ASVAB upon entry into the US Army: AFQT 152, AFQT 99%, GS 19, AR 30, WK 35, MK 24, PC 14, AS 10, MC 18, EI 13, and VE 49 leading to job qualification scores GT 129, GM 108, EL 122, CL 132, MM 107, SC 114, CO 120, FA 134, OF 112, ST 121 (DLAB 100). These scores allowed me choice of any job I wanted in the Army. I chose Preventive Medicine, and after 3 years was selected for Military Intelligence via Officer Candidate School at Ft Benning, GA.

Bible Studies

I led a ladies bible study on the book of 1 Corinthians (3 months) with Community Bible Church vicinity Atlanta, GA. Through Officer Christian Fellowship (OCF), I lead a bible study on the books of John, Isaiah, and Ephesians. I currently lead a bible study group for ladies at In Focus Church.

Cooking

I am a retiree experienced with cooking family meals every day. I bake and prepare ethnic foods as well. I attended 1 class with 700 kitchen cooking school in Savannah, GA. I Host Breakfast Club every Friday for 1.5 years for 6 middle school girls. Each week is a different theme or country. Table setting, music, and knowledge is included along with the food.

Drawing

I received A's in honors Art in high school, had drawings published in 2 magazines, and attended 1 year of College Drawing at Florida State University. I gave hand drawn portraits as gifts to Soldiers while serving in Iraq. I currently mentor my talented daughter in her drawing endeavors (projects, competitions, etc).

Literature

My favorite subject in high school and college, classic literature provides the foundation of creative writing and compelling storytelling. Literature is more than Trivia about Book & Author. It reflects periods of history (real or imagined), explores the human condition, and expresses hidden meanings and controversial messages. Tutoring with me in Literature involves practicing skills that will improve reading, critical thinking, and writing at a minimum.

Reading

Reading for comprehension leads to reading effectively for all education, professional, and personal endeavors. Whether in primary school, high school, college, military, or ESL status, there ARE techniques to improve reading for tests, for research, and for enjoyment. From basics to speed reading to test prep, I will be glad to help you where you are.

SAT Math

Am fully familiar with SAT Math methods for success. This was my college entry exam of choice.

SAT Reading

I used my SAT scores to attend college courses with Florida State University and University of Maryland.

Writing

Well written words mean better communication, fulfilling expression, and (in the cases of essay competitions or grant writing) monetary compensation. Excellent writing is a combination of great storytelling AND proper sentence construction! I can assist you with finding your "voice" while improving the technical writing skills needed for flow and clarity.
