About Nicole

I have three years of experience as an English teacher in a public school and I enjoyed it very much, but I need a more flexible schedule at this time in my life. Tutoring is a way for me to continue working with students and help them realize what they are capable of with carefully designed, individual instruction and hard work. Instruction is most effective when it is focused on an individual rather than a whole class setting.
I also know how it feels to experience frustration when learning a new concept or trying to master a new skill. I struggled with certain math courses I had to take, and I needed a tutor myself. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, but how we handle certain obstacles can be the difference between success and failure.

My approach helped my students achieve higher scores on their state exams in the areas of reading comprehension and writing. Since that time, I have furthered my education (Master of Arts in Education) and I have learned more exciting strategies to help students succeed. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a Master of Arts in Education (secondary English).

If you are struggling in reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, responding to literature or writing essays, I invite you to try learning things in a new way. I can identify an approach that works for you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
