About Amanda

I just resigned from my 11 year career as a middle school teacher in May 2016. During those 11 years, 6th and 8th grade English/Language Arts and 7th and 8th grade social studies. I sincerely loved my career as a middle school teacher. Being able to bring difficult or not so exciting concepts to life for my students and forming relationships of trust with my students while building their confidence as learners have always been strengths of mine.

My teaching philosophy has always been that getting kids engaged is half the battle. While I put intense focus on required standards and skills and have very high expectations, I do so in a creative, motivating way--typically by using my sense of humor, creative songs/games, etc. I recently had a student who is now a senior in high school e-mail me to say that she and her classmates had been singing one of the songs I taught them about writing paragraphs in 8th grade as a they prepared for a high school writing assessment. So often students aren't engaged in their learning, which makes overcoming academic difficulties even harder. My teaching methods have been rather successful. During the 11 years I taught middle school, my students' standardized test scores were ALWAYS well above school, district, region, and state averages. I had numerous students achieve perfect scores on the Grade Eight Writing Assessment and my students' 7th grade social studies scores on the 2016 administration of the Georgia Milestones were the highest in the Bartow County School district and my students' passing rates were nearly double the average for the state of Georgia.

Though my teaching career was very successful, I felt the need to resign to give myself some new opportunities. Number one, when I teach I devote everything I've got to it. That means I spent MANY of my evenings after school and my weekends in full lesson preparation/assessment mode. At this point in my life, I want to have a little more flexibility to focus on my family and on church/community activities. That doesn't mean I love teaching any less--I just want to have a little more control over my schedule so I can have a better balance between teaching and the time I want to spend on the other things that are important to me. Although I'm not officially in the classroom anymore, I will always want to teach in some way. On my last day of work in May 2016, a colleague came up to me in tears and said, "I'm heartbroken that my son will never get to have you as a teacher. No matter where you go or what you do, you need to be teaching in some way." That's what I still want to do, and I love the idea of tutoring because it gives me that flexibility I'm wanting while also giving me the chance to focus all of my time and efforts on one student or small groups of students at a time, rather than trying to spread my attention among 30-35 students at a time. I am humbled to have been gifted with the ability to teach and the capacity to engage/connect with children, and I would be honored to be able to share those gifts with you by becoming a tutor in your area of need.

I taught English/Language Arts for 10 out of my 11 years of teaching. I have a strong love of literature and my passion is teaching students the strategies they need to know to be able to successfully read and truly enjoy the act of reading as much as I do. In terms of grammar, proofreading, and writing, I prepared students for the Grade Eight Writing Assessment for 9 years, and their results were incredible. I myself have won numerous writing awards and enjoy passing along the techniques that have helped me to my students.

Although I only taught social studies for 1 full year, it was an incredible experience. I love making historical events come alive for my students, I am known to write engaging raps to help my students remember different government concepts, and my students' test scores for the 1 year of social studies I taught were the highest in my school district.

I am generally available to tutor every day from 9 am to 9 pm and I can travel to students or meet them online. If you need help being more successful in your studies, get in touch with me and let's get started!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I taught one section of 8th grade social studies for 1 year and four sections of 7th grade social studies during the 2015-2016 school year. My students' assessment results on the 2016 administration of the 7th grade social studies Georgia Milestones were the highest in the Bartow County School district. Additionally, 62% of my students scored at the 3/4 level on the Georgia Milestones, as compared to a 39% average across the state of Georgia as a whole.
