I have over 10 years mentoring, tutoring, and teaching students. I am currently a college professor and want to help students get ahead or help students that didn't quite get it in class. I have a BS in Biology.
I also have a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from University of Alabama at Birmingham. I primarily have a background in general biology. My specialty areas are general biology, environmental science and toxicology.
In my experience as a student and a teacher, tutoring is most effective when information is presented in several different ways. Student are individuals that posses many different learning styles. As a teacher, having a diverse teaching style is necessary because this allows for the opportunity for each type of learner to shine. For example, during my teaching experiences I realized that for some students memorizing material for a test was a strength, yet applying that same knowledge to a “real world” problem was more difficult for them. Alternatively, other students struggled with the theoretical aspects of course material presented in formal lectures, but improved their understanding after seeing the practical application of a particular concept. Based on these experiences, I believe a combination approach for learning concepts is needed. My style of tutoring is making sure my students are prepared and feel confident. I am patient and willing to work at a slow pace so that my students can comprehend the information.
Teaching and tutoring should meet the needs of the students. It is very important for students to feel that they have come away with a better understanding of concepts and practical use of the concepts. Therefore, at the beginning of a session I will ask the student what he or see would like to get out of the session. For example what concepts are of interest, do they have any weakness, and how would they like for these concepts to be taught. I think that it is important for students to understand that their opinion and goals matter to me. This will create open communication between the student and myself. I pride myself in making difficult topics easy to understand. I encourage you to contact me and schedule a session. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed! Adrienne is very knowledgeable and has great followup. She just doesn't spend time during the touring session...she follows up afterwards with notes and materials to support the students post tutoring studying. Goes the extra mile!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
