I am an experienced Japanese tutor certified in Japan as a junior and senior high school Japanese and English teacher. Having lived in both Japan and the USA, I have taught more than 20 years from preschool aged children to adults. I am familiar with a wide range of textbooks and teaching materials as well as methods and techniques.
Before moving to the USA in 1997, I worked for an international business college in Japan as a Japanese language instructor for international students in the bachelor's and master's degree programs. I also taught expatriate employees from the USA at Japanese language training classes of Intel Corporation Japan.
After moving to the USA, I taught both school aged children and adults. More specifically, between 2004 and 2006, I was a chief instructor of 3-week Japanese summer programs offered by a Japanese boarding high school in Tennessee. I also taught Japanese writing and reading to Japanese high school students in the East Tennessee area.
Since 2008, I have tutored both Japanese native students and Americans learning Japanese as a second language. Different levels and needs included in the tutoring were: Japanese writing and reading for college preparation, Japanese language art for high school entrance examinations, Japanese for AP/SAT examinations, reinforcement lessons for high school/college Japanese classes, and Japanese general/business conversation.
I specialize in teaching Americans to speak more authentic Japanese. With my background including professional experience and academic knowledge as an English teacher in Japan, I have also taught TOEFL/SAT essay writing and English grammar since 2008.
When I privately tutor a student, I discuss needs and expectations before starting and set a long-term goal with short term objectives. I try to make my instructions fun and motivating for my student by using teaching tools and methods to my student's learning style and preferences. With my school psychology background, I am a good listener and flexible to each student's abilities.
I try to be flexible with time. While I have a 12-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes.
I am looking forward to meeting you and helping you improve your Japanese language skills. Masae is making tutoring sessions fun and exciting. My son is learning Japanese at his own pace. I recommend Masae for anyone who wants to learn this language.
Japanese language. She was very knowledgeable in the subject. My daughter enjoyed the session. We will continue with her.
First lesson was great. Masae is very efficient in grammar. Anyone can speak a language but to explain it is another skill entirely. I am looking forward to my next lesson.
Masae helped me understand difficult Japanese grammar concepts. She was an amazing tutor and she was friendly and patient as well!
Masae is making bite size suggestions so my son can both learn and feel confident with his own beginning skills. Her positive feedback on the little things makes a big difference!
It was my first lesson and Masae immediately took the time to determine the areas that I need to focus on in a very efficient manner. I also learned a lot of cultural information from her that will help me improve my speaking skills.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
