My passion for teaching is a reflection on my love of learning. I am naturally curious of the world around me and strive to foster a growth mentality and be a lifelong learner. In high school I was the Illinois math state champion and qualified for the USA Math Olympiad (top 150 in country). I graduated from Washington U. in St. Louis with a BA in Mathematics with Honors. I truly enjoy sharing my knowledge and making a difference in someone's life.
In college I was a teaching assistant for Calculus and Probability/Statistics and tutored many students on a 1-on-1 basis. While working at a NASDAQ 100 company I mentored several junior analysts.
I'm very patient and will break down a concept into more digestible chunks. I will draw parallels and compare/contrast to topics you already understand and can relate to. I will explain an idea from multiple angles until "it clicks". I will teach you multiple ways to solve a problem to ensure a deeper understanding and provide you a backup plan during the heat of battle (those fun exams!). To say Hank was great would be an understatement! Not only did he know the material extremely well, he was very patient and explained it to my daughter in a way she could understand. He also quickly identified knowledge gaps that was causing her problems with some of the topics in class. Before working with Hank, my daughter's grade was an 84. After 2 lessons she got a 98 on her test! And on her next test she got a 100!! He is now helping her prepare for the SAT. My daughter went from dreading it to now actually looking forward to it!
Hank is patient and attentive! He has a thorough command of the subject matter and is always able to answer my son's questions in a way that he can understand! My son really enjoys his sessions with Hank, he has very clever methods for communicating otherwise complex ideas! Thank you Hank, for making Algebra easy!
Hank has met with my daughter a few times and each time she has understood the material and felt much more confident at the end of the session. He is personable toward her age group, which puts her at ease, and is flexible with his scheduling, which helps with our unpredictable schedule.
My son is a senior in high school taking Trigonometry. He needs a little more one on one help. Hank has tutored him twice and we can already see a very positive change in his grade, attitude and self-confidence. Hank comes to our home, which really helps us as a family. We hope Hank can work with us through the rest of the semester!
My daughter recently met with Hank a few times, and so far so good! He has an excellent demeanor, very professional, and always prompt!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
