With my current junior college teaching schedule, needed tutoring in Geology, Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Physical Science, Geography, American History is available on the afternoons of Wednesday, Thursday, and some weekend days.
WyzAnt Tutoring is not just for students. Teachers, Parents, Grandparents, and others can use it to brush on these subjects at any time. An hour or two of tutoring before a spring-break or summer trip to the beach or to the Blue Ridge Mountains can make the trip an enjoyable learning experience.
WyzAnt Tutoring can be tailored to help prepare for springtime nature hikes at Gwinnett County Parks, Stone Mt., and elsewhere. A little advance instruction can help you more enjoy going on nature hikes and with gained confidence, you can learn to conduct your own short local hikes. Wildflower season can begin as early as late February or early March.
My WyzAnt tutoring can help you gain a basic understanding of such concepts as Plate Tectonics, the difference between weather and climate, some of the fascinating things about Georgia Geology, Ecology, Geography, and History. Your learning about some of the things found and or mined in Georgia can be used to capture a child's imagination. These things include gold, diamonds, copper, platinum, mica, feldspar, granite, marble, kaolin, dinosaur bones, and numerous types of fossils.
My 40-plus year interest in Science, Geography, and American History is the result of my parents and their enjoyment of being outdoors. This included a 1-acre garden on a creek bottom, an orchard with apple and pear trees and muscadine vines, and the remainder of the 7-acre homeplace being a pine-hardwood transition forest. Family trips often included trips to Dahlonega for gold panning and to Franklin, NC for rubies and sapphires. Our 1973 family vacation took us to visit such places as SW Colorado, including Mesa Verde Nat'l Park, the Great Salt Lake in Utah, Redwood Nat'l Park, Yosemite, Sequoia, the Grand Canyon, and Carlsbad Caverns.
I am a Gwinnett native who has spent time elsewhere, such as Statesboro for 4 years and El Paso, Texas for 14 years.
Going further back, several of my ancestors were involved in the Georgia and California Gold Rushes. Some of your own ancestors may have been involved, too.
You are hereby invited to come share my enjoyment of learning about Nature and History. With my current junior college teaching schedule, needed tutoring in Geology, Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, … Read more
The stated rate may be adjusted downward for shorter commutes, family economic difficulties, and/or small groups of 2 - 3 students.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had a long-term interest in American History. My family has been in this country since 1748, with indirect involvements in the Revolutionary War and direct and indirect involvements with the American Civil War.
Different ancestors were part of the Georgia and California Gold Rushes.
I am always eager to enter into discussions, teaching, and/or research as a way of gaining more information about American History, as well as greater insights, on subjects local, regional, and national.
The broader study of environmental science includes important concepts of ecology, such as abiotic vs. biotic ecosystem components, invasive species, food webs, niches & habitats, the effects of weather and climate, the definitions of species, population, community, biome, biological succession, range of tolerance, and much more.
In an effort to engage younger students, it can be useful to mentally prepare some "talking points" to capture their attention.
Most kids have an interest in dinosaurs - you can relate to them that there have been some dinosaur bones found in Georgia. You can also relate to them the facts that, in addition to gold mining being a part of Georgia history, diamonds and platinum have been found in Georgia.
Interest can be captured by the fact that Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River and that we have the highest waterfalls in the eastern U.S.
Geography coursework at Georgia Southern and UT El Paso. Familiarity with geology & geography enhanced by being a Georgia native plus 14 years of residency in El Paso, TX, and repeated visits to family members in AZ, NM, and OK.
Have worked in and/or studied most aspects of geology since my senior year of high school (1971-1972).
Tutor enjoys outdoor study by way of nature walks, guided field trips, visits to local nature centers, and engaging in nature photography.
Natural processes that are easily observed outdoors include weathering and erosion of rocks and minerals, stream processes, the effects of weather and climate on soil formation and plant communities, and how plants and animals occupy different parts of the food web.
