About Thomas

I am ESL certified by Oxford Seminars. I have extensive experience teaching ESL in Chile and Colombia and it ranges from teaching teenagers to adults. In Chile, I taught English at a high school in Santiago, Chile for several months.

Specifically, I taught the speaking and listening aspects of English while I was there along with getting students to practice speaking English in drama and debate after school. In Colombia, I taught English in a different environment by traveling to office buildings in the city of Bogota and teaching English to business people for 11 months. I'd teach classes of less than 10 people and would help them with their conversational skills by talking about videos we watched and articles I had them read.

My style of tutoring is practical and I focus on the specific needs a student has. I let them tell me their problem areas and make their weaknesses turn into strengths. Additionally, I teach English in an authentic manner and don't teach it strictly out of a textbook. My authentic manner includes videos and games that are appropriate for each age. I like tutoring because I get a chance to see how much someone improves in a subject and being able to help someone. I have a helpful personality and am glad to help.

Besides teaching ESL, I can help tutor Spanish and several social studies subjects in a practical style of tutoring as well. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I can help with American history because I view it as a story of who we are and am enthusiastic about it. I majored in political science which incorporated some U.S. history during my classes. Plus, I can really sit down and look at someone's paper about a topic in history and point out questions that can be answered on the subject.

ESL/ESOL

I am qualified to teach ESL because I received my TEFL certification from Oxford Seminars in 2013 and taught English for Reisbeck P.E.S. Institute in Bogota, Colombia which taught business people. Plus, I have also taught high school students in Santiago, Chile at semi-private school called Hannover. Thus, I'm well-rounded in my background of teaching English to people of all different ages.

Football

I really like to watch college football on television and I played it for four years in high school. I'm very familiar with the fundamentals for coaching someone and receive great joy out of helping someone develop mentally and physically in this sport. Plus, I can explain it to anyone who simply wants to learn about it in a classroom setting.

Geography

I am qualified to tutor geography because I played a lot of Geosafari as a kid and I learned a huge amount of it in my political science courses while I was in college. Plus, I'm humbled to have seen geography in several places in the world from Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina to seeing the Amazon River in Colombia. Also, I'll teach it in a way that is fun and show the beauty of places that I've seen in the world.

Government & Politics

I majored in political science while I was in college. Plus, I've interned for a Congressman and have hands on experience in the functions of government. Thirdly, it is a subject that I like.

Political Science

Political science is a subject that includes a variety of topics such as political theory, constitutional law, foreign policy, and international relations. My experience with majoring in it while I was in college can help you with any issue that you have with the subject. I will simply ask you which specific problems you have about learning the subject and I will make a productive use of your time solving them. For example, if you want better grades on your papers, then I can show you ways to provide good, specific details to your teacher or professor. Additionally, I've worked in the legislative branch of the federal government as well and can provide you with unique insight about how the government works.

Spanish

I am qualified to teach this subject because I know several dialects of Spanish. I know the Colombian, Venezuelan, and Chilean dialects as a result of living in Chile and Colombia. Additionally, I have studied Spanish in the classroom between 7th grade and my senior year of college.

World History

I can tutor world history because I like studying it and I made an A in this class when I was in college. I would teach this subject as if it were a book with chapters that goes through good times and bad times; thus, putting the "story" in history. The idea of this is that chapters have been written and are currently being written when it comes to history. Therefore, it's my way of making it interesting for someone to learn if they think of it like a book that is alive.

Help for Spanish

We had to start at the beginning. Alphabets were a must. After a short period of time he was able to access what I needed. Overall it went well. Next session will be a review to see where I am at overall.
