Hello, my name is Philip S. and I hold a Master's in Math Education from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Morehouse College. I have been tutoring students K-12 for the past 15 years as well as some adults here and there. I originally started tutoring when my college roommate and I bought a Japanese math and reading franchise. The franchise's teaching techniques were based on a Japanese style of teaching that focused on guiding students in a way that allowed them to learn independence and mastery of a particular concept. The students learned self-reliance which when coupled with plenty of repetition, lead students to remember information and perform well in the classroom where there was no tutor present for guidance. I have adopted these same techniques into my teaching style. I've also improved them by using multiple approaches that appeal to different types of learners. Different types of learners (audio, visual, kinesthetic, or combinations of the three) learn best when their particular learning style is constantly stimulated.

Once my business partner expressed the desire to sell the education franchise, I became a math and reading K-12 tutor for The National Lighthouse Foundation. This non-profit organization is one of the largest after school supplemental education tutorial providers in GA. While there I provided tutorial services in Gwinnett, Douglas, Dekalb, Cobb, Fulton, Atlanta, and Clarke County public schools.

I began to work for a private SAT prep firm in East Cobb when I left the foundation. There I continued to tutor K-12 but I also provided SAT, ACT, and GED prep.

Currently, I am a math teacher at a Fulton County High School. I teach Geometry, AP Calculus AB, and SAT Prep. I'm also the son of an ex-NBA all-star and I am well known for my ability to teach the game of basketball. I have coached on various levels and I volunteer in the community as a youth coach.

Not only am I a teacher, but I have three children that are currently in elementary school. I consistently help them on a daily basis with their work in every subject. I am very in tune with kindergarten, third grade, and fifth grade work because these are the grades that my children are in. This, combined with me teaching sixth grade last year, and passing all other elementary certification exams shows my high level of capability in the elementary tutoring arena.

In addition to tutoring and test prep, I've taught various subjects in public schools for the past five years. One of the major focuses among the schools in which I was employed was study skills. Study skills techniques that I've taught range from taking and reviewing Cornell notes, to creating flashcards and pneumonic devices. I've also taught test taking techniques which include using process of elimination, working backwards by plugging multiple choice answers into the question, and using context clues to derive answers.

Basketball

I am the son of ex-NBA player Phil Smith, who was a two time all star and one time NBA championship winner. My father taught me the game of basketball starting from the age of three and I am very well versed in all aspects of the game especially the fundamentals. Therefore, I can teach anybody to become a well rounded player. With my practice techniques I can show a player how to become an effective shooter, ball handler, passer, scorer, rebounder, defender, and much more. I personally played competitive basketball in California and have successfully coached both of my two younger brothers into becoming division I scholarship players at Cal Berkeley and San Francisco. I have also received the award of coach of the year from the national youth sports (NYS) league in Cobb County and I recently coached a ninth grade, high school, boys basketball team to a winning season. I also workout and maintain my personal basketball skills by playing regularly. This helps me stay in shape and allows me to effectively demonstrate various drills and practice techniques. Finally, I teach players how to build basketball strength and stamina. Strengthening specific muscles are very key to becoming an extremely competitive basketball player. Particularly the lower back, legs, shoulders, and core abdominal muscles.

Knowledgable and Patient Tutor!

Philip helped my son with graphing parallel and perpendicular lines in the coordinate grid. He is also helping him understand how to examine an equation and predict what the lines should look like when graphed. My son also expressed how patient and effective Philip is at teaching him these math concepts. I look forward to seeing my son continue to grow from Philip's instruction.

Knowledgeable Math Tutor

Phillip was able to hit the ground running with my daughter during their tutoring session. He explained some of the ACT Math concepts that she didn't understand. He also explained how to use her calculator properly to calculate Math problems. I would highly recommend him.

Super relatable and easy to talk to.

My daughter was reluctant to get tutoring for the SAT. Philip broke down the benefits of scoring high and I think my daughter was impressed. He's super relatable and was easy to talk to. My daughter got more out of our first session than she thought she would. Thank you Philip, looking forward to next week.
