About Mia

**Update 12/5/16** my availability is now limited to weekends as I have accepted a position at Emory. I may also be available for online sessions during weekday evenings but this depends on the week as well as the time.

I hold a master's in Biology with focus on molecular biology and genomics research. My research was largely based on methods to extract forensically relevant information from DNA. I have basic experience in immunology and have spent a few months in a cancer research lab as well. I thoroughly enjoy research but at the same time I equally enjoy teaching and being able to relay information to a variety of individuals. I believe that you truly don't have complete understanding of a subject until you are able to successfully teach it to someone else.

My experience is as follows:
I have one semester of teaching experience at the University level as a supplemental instructor at Kennesaw State University in the subject of Human Anatomy & Physiology II. I have one year of tutoring experience also at the University level for a wide variety of subjects ranging from science to math to English (I love writing and can help with essays) to sociology, ethics and criminal justice. I also have one year of teaching experience at a private high school (honors biology & geometry).

I am available weekends and can offer discounted rates for group sessions, please contact me for details!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I used to student teach human anatomy & physiology at Kennesaw State. I also have my master's degree in biology which is helpful if you are taking a graduate level anatomy course. I have experience tutoring anatomy at both the high school & college level.

Biology

I used to teach high school biology at a private school in Dunwoody. I also have my master's degree in biology from Georgia State University. Finally, I used to student teach anatomy & physiology at Kennesaw State.

Elementary Math

I currently tutor elementary math and really enjoy teaching the basics. Laying a proper foundation is key in being able to succeed later. I used to teach high school math.

Genetics

In graduate school, I excelled in genetics and received an A, but most importantly I love genetics because it is a combination of my two favorite subjects- science and mathematics. I enjoy calculating probabilities as well as learning about Mendelian disorders. I taught a chapter of genetics within the honors biology class I had the privilege to teach at a high school level. My most recent employment allowed me to dive into genomics, an area of genetics. Should I decide to pursue a PhD, it would be in genetics.

Geometry

I used to teach high school geometry (9th grade) at a private high school.

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is my favorite among all the chemistry courses I took. I received a high B (was 2 points from getting an A in this class) and I thoroughly enjoyed the subject. I was able to master acid/base reactions, functional groups, resonance structures and stereochemistry as well as draw beautiful chair conformations!

Proofreading

Previously, I helped university students with essay writing, editing & proofreading.
