About Sara

I work with students starting from their strengths and interests, then make their challenges successes. All children need a sense of agency and confidence. I work to show them they can be successful, even in the skills they never thought they could. I start from what they know how to do well, and use that to show them they can use the same skills in a different way, to meet their challenges. It's great to see a smile on a student's face when they see they can do something new.

I have experience with the Making Math Real program and Eureka Math. Both programs help students visualize more clearly how numbers work when combined or changed. The Making Math Real program has many tricks to make more difficult operations simpler and help students develop fluency quickly and easily.

My strongest area is in language teaching - both English as a second language, French, and elementary Spanish. I help students with both their oral and literacy skills. I also have training and experience in teaching reading using the Orton-Gillingham method.

I am available as early as you wish to around 6 p.m. during the week and afternoons on the weekends. I am happy to come to your home or to meet your student at their school or other public location (library or coffee shop, for example).

My base rate is $45 an hour.

Please contact me so we can discuss your needs. I am happy to provide a free consultation so we can see if I will really be able to help your student.
I require 24 hours notice if you wish to cancel a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have completed the Academy of Orton-Gillingham in-class dyslexia training at the Schenk School and have over 300 hours of experience tutoring one child with dyslexia, as well as several other on a shorter term basis.

ESL/ESOL

I have over 20 years experience teaching ESOL students at the elementary school level, and about 5 years with adults and college-aged ESOL students. I taught French at the middle and high school levels for 7 years.

Phonics

I have taken the required in-class training to teach phonics recommended by the Academy of Orton-Giilingham Practitioners. I did this under the auspices of the Schenk School, which has also provided supervision for my tutoring. I have tutored over 300 hours using this method during the past 6 years.

Reading

I have more than 20 years experience working with children and literacy. I also have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to phonics instruction, which helps students gain confidence as they gradually build their skills in decoding and sight word recognition. I have used this program often as a classroom teacher and individual tutor.

Spelling

For the past 6 years I have worked with students as a classroom teacher and tutor helping them with their spelling through the systematic Orton-Gillingham phonics program. I have a scope and sequence of sounds and spellings I use that makes student progress easy and ensures success along the way, so that the student never feels overwhelmed and constantly reviews the skills learned so far. I also like to work on fluency with oral reading out loud and helping students read with expression so that they comprehend better what they read. I can also help your student with the writing process, by building writing skills at the sentence, paragraph and essay level.

Writing

My MS degree in Applied Linguistics has given me the background and understanding of how languages work and what the component skills required of proficient language users are. My experience teaching English is extensive, as I worked with second language English learners for more than twenty years in grades k-5. This included all aspects of oral language and literacy, including writing.
