About Colleen

My love of learning and passion for differentiation is what motivates me as a teacher. I believe that all students are different and have learning styles that are reflective of those difference. These students must be provided with teaching that meets their specific needs. I specialize in teaching students with learning challenges in my Special Education classroom and have taught ESOL/Special Education for middle and elementary school.

I love seeing students, who are disinterested or not engaged, suddenly become motivated to learn! Linking students' interests and learning styles to their learning is key to my teaching techniques. Facilitating the needs of students through supportive instruction, scaffolding, and differentiation creates success. I work with students whose primary first language is not English (English language learners), students who learn differently (ADHD, Autistic, Specific Learning Disabilities, and various other special needs) as well as general education students.

In addition to my specialized training and receipt of an ESOL endorsement, I believe that my commitment to cultural responsiveness and desire to truly understand each student's unique needs is what makes me an outstanding ESOL tutor. Additionally, I have taught 6th-8th grade English language learners and all of my students demonstrated growth on state mandated tests as well as ACCESS tests.

I am a Georgia certified elementary educator and have seen continual growth in students in my classroom. Allowing students to express themselves through varied learning techniques and finding a best fit for each child is what has made me a successful elementary teacher.

I am currently certified in P-12 Special Education. I have and currently work with students who have various learning needs such as ADD/ADHD, Autism, SLD, ODD, EBD, MID, SDD, and the like. I am very passionate about helping these students reach their full potential. Depending on student need, I have various strategies and tools that I use to assist struggling students and help them regain a self-confidence that is often lost from prior unsuccessful experiences in the classroom.

I look forward to hearing from you and working to help you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am currently certified in P-12 Special Education. I have multiple ADHD students in my class and am very familiar with strategies to assist students in focusing. My teaching style allows students to move and learn at the same time. When it is necessary to sit still, I have tools such as widgets for student use. We take frequent short monitored breaks to allow students to reset and focus on the lesson at hand.

Aspergers

I am currently certified in P-12 Special Education. I have taught students with Aspergers in my class and am very familiar with strategies to assist these students. Since these students are high functioning, their communication skills are often much improved in comparison to other students on the spectrum. Understanding that these students are often in need of social skills, is an important piece of knowledge and one that I incorporate into my lessons.

Great fit — She was great with our son. She was patient and very knowledgeable and asked my son's needs right away. He loved her and can't wait to see her again. ...
