About Georgina

I am a Certified School Counselor who has had the opportunity to work with students in the United States and United Arab Emirates. I started tutoring others when I was in Middle School, helping the neighborhood children, with their homework and later in high school where I tutored my classmates in our core subjects. I don't consider myself a stellar student, but I have achieved my academic goals. As an undergraduate, I desired to have research worthy of presenting at Harvard, and in 2007, I presented my research "Incorporating African American Culture in a Career Focus Group Counseling Experience for Pre-adolescent African American Girls," at a Graduate Research Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I am published in Peer-reviewed School Counseling journals as well as Business and Medical publications.

As a tutor I believe my goal is to facilitate learning in your child. I believe all children have the ability to learn and advance on any subject of their desire (from video gaming to advance chemistry). For those subjects that don't have the same connection or spark, kids need to understand that they can still succeed on those subjects, if they can a find a way not to given in to their anxiety and run away from the subject (both emotionally and physically). I like to make learning fun, I can alter my voice and tell jokes to lighten the mood. I like to think of learning as walking through a rain storm, there are times when it is light and times when it is hard, but the important thing is not to give up. I enjoy working with students in all grade levels and I enjoy helping students discover their true talents. I believe myself to be an Educator, and I work to facilitate learning in students. It is important for students to recite facts, however they should understand the meaning and significance behind the facts. I believe that many students have the ability to improve their reading and cognitive thinking skills, if they find a way to embrace their uniqueness and have others around them to cultivate an environment of learning.

I have tutored ELL/ESL/ESOL students from ages 11-35, in core academic subjects. In 2009, I served as a Summer School Instructor for Global Leaders, Inc., a non-profit that provided educational enrichment for Korean and Korean-American youth in Northern Virginia. From 1997-1998, I served as a volunteer tutor for Spanish Speaking youth at the Bruce Guadalupe Charter School and adults at the Spanish Community Center in Milwaukee, WI. I helped Spanish speaking adult prepare to take their Civics Exam for the USCIS Naturalization process. From 2004-2009, I tutored ELL/ESL/ESOL adults to pass the TOEFL examinations for college and graduate school entry. Additionally, I served as a Graduate Research Assistant for grant funded projects that examined evaluation of English as a Second Language programs in Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland. I have presented my research at several national counseling conventions for the American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education & Supervision and the Southern Association for Counselor Education & Supervision.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I led a career development/career exploration group for 5th grade African American girls enrolled in a public elementary school in Washington, DC. I used Betz's Theory of Career Development of Women as a framework. The group met for 13 sessions and we explored topics from self-identity to the role of historical and modern day African American women in Art, Science, and Business.

College Counseling

As a certified school counselor, I have personally assisted and guided dozens of students through the college process, from selecting a school to finding financial aid. I have experience writing letters of recommendation for students. I have helped students and their parents register and select classes, housing, and apply for scholarships.

Proofreading

In the last 2 months, I corrected an 8-page research observation paper for an online graduate student attending the University of Southern California.

Study Skills

I taught a Study Skills class to incoming freshmen at the University of Maryland-College Park, for the Academic Achievement Programs. I possess materials from a School Counselor's perspective to address study skills from K-12 grade students. I also worked as a Research Assistant on a project where I interviewed college Science and Computer Science majors to find out if their study habits were connected with their diet and sleep.

She has some intriguing information and ideas that have helped me with my son. Just when I thought I have hit a corner and had no other ideas and almost gave up, she gave me a world full of knowledge and experience, I knew about . God Bless Her!!
