My love of teaching started with my desire to share my fascination for learning new things. Being homeschooled meant I had to develop my own study methods to struggle through classes. After completing my GED, I decided to pursue more education. For my Bachelor's, I worked hard and graduated cum laude with a Speech Degree and English Minor. Earning my Master's Degree in Performance Studies took dedication, but it was worth it! I love to help others develop their skills, so that they too can take pride in their accomplishments! Throughout my college studies, I helped classmates to better understand our material. As an English tutor for 5 years, and a Speech College Professor for 2 years, I've have had the blessing of helping over 450 students to increase their potential and improve their grades. When that happens, it thrills me!
First, I specialize in tutoring in English for success, in school or in a career, with particular concentrations in grammar, writing, and reading. Second, I specialize in lessons in Public Speaking and Dramatic Performance, particularly if you are afraid to speak in public. I also teach Art and Home Economics (like sewing and cooking). Regardless of your subject or level, my goal is to keep you engaged. I assign homework after each lesson and periodically assess your progress, to keep you from being either overwhelmed or under-challenged.
I try to be flexible with my schedule, to find times that are best for you.
I often find that meeting with 1 or 2 other students increases your own skills. If you are willing to meet with others, I will lower my rate to 35/hr for you. In a group setting, I have no more than 3 students all at a similar level, and each student is given personal attention with their homework, understanding the concepts, and/or improving their skill.

My daughter had only 2 lessons with Deidre and my son had 1. They really like her, and my son thought she was very knowledgeable and patient. Her lessons are geared towards her pupil's needs.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied at a Bible College for my undergrad, taking 16 credits in Bible Classes. I continue Bible studies on my own, as it is one of my interests. I have tutored fellow classmates and helped various church-goers to interpret Scripture, though knowledge of Bible times, meaning of context, and understanding of intent.
I learned to cook a variety of dishes, mostly self-taught, developing my skills independently using books and videos. I love cooking more than baking, but have experimented in both fields. While at college, I used my skills to teach others how to use cookbooks, what flavors blend together, and which utensils to use.
I took 3 drawing classes in college, including Advanced Drawing. I have created artwork in graphite, charcoal, conte, pen crosshatch, and stipple. During college, I mentored fellows students who were struggling with our drawing classes.
I have been tutoring elementary students for the past 3 yrs. I work with them in multiple subjects: Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, Science, etc. While getting my college degree, I took Instructional Methods, a course that taught me how to teach to various age groups. I use methods from then, like games, songs, etc. to increase retention in elementary students, and make learning fun!

Among the things I've written is a 47 page Monodrama that was later performed before 200+ people. As a Speech Professor, I've taught college students to speack clearly and professionally. I've tutored students in both written and spoken English for 5 years.
I have an English minor (graduated cum laude). For my minor, I passed the course Advanced Grammar and Composition with an A-. I continued to write extensively researched papers while earning my Master's Degree. My greatest grammar skill is editing, which I used to help proofread classmates' papers. For 5 years, I have tutored students in their English grammar, usage, and composition. I have worked with international students as well.
I teach cursive and manuscript handwriting. I have tutored in improving handwriting, or learning cursive for three years. My students study letter formation, then write sentences while I advise on how to make their handwriting clearer and better. For upper level students, I also discuss how to hand write letters in a way that the recipient admires the beautiful writing.
In addition to tutoring in multiple subjects and having a college education (Master's level), I have specifically homeschooled families for a few months at a time. I usually work with a curriculum of the parent's choice, and can discuss curriculum options if parents are unfamiliar with homeschooling curriculum. I use visual aids and games to work with the books the children are learning from. Per Georgia law, the parent must submit a 'Declaration of Intent to Homeschool' form, so I ask that this form be submitted once you decide to homeschool with me. Also, in keeping with Georgia law, I make sure that each child learns from these 5 subjects: Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Reading. Since homeschooling needs more hours, I typically discount my hourly rate by 10-25% depending on the distance from and time needed with your children.
I learned to Crochet when I was 13, and in later years, taught my self to Cross-Stitch. I have crocheted doll clothes, blanket squares, and a pumpkin candy dish (self-designed). Using counted cross-stitch kits, I have cross-stitched 3 historical buildings and a 5x7 flying angel. I taught my sister to cross-stitch; she has made 2 bookmarks after learning from me. I have used french knots, half stitches, beaded stitches, lazy daisies, etc.
I took painting classes in college, working with acrylic and watercolor. I have painted 4 themed watercolors, and 1 themed acrylic. During college, I mentored fellow students who struggled with painting watercolor and acrylic.
For three years, I have been teaching phonics to children through a series of 13 charts, and a corresponding book. To help student retention, I use flash cards, drills, charts, games, and exercises that build a strong phonics foundation for them to rely on, even after lessons have ceased. I periodically assess a child's phonics retention by his reading ability. For adults, I also teach the International Phonetic Alphabet, and go through every formation of the phonetic sounds in Standard American English.
Editing written material is one of my strongest skills! I have taken classes on Advanced Grammar and Composition, and Advanced Creative writing. For those classes, I developed good proofreading skills for both clear and engaging writing. These skills helped me in writing my Master's Graduate Project, a 47 page Monodrama. I have proofread other's written schoolwork, professional papers, sermons, presentations, and advertisements.
I have a Master's in Performance Studies, for which I studied Diction, Public Speaking, and Communication. As a college speech professor, I helped over 450 students to improve their diction, confidence, presentation, and professional speaking skills. Among those students were foreign and special needs, who I gave one-on-one lessons to help bring them up to the level of the rest of the class. For 4 years, I have tutored students, helping them work through their public speaking fears and vocal problems to become good communicators.
Depending on the age and level of reading ability, I use different methods. I use phonics to teach the student how to read, adding games and sensory activities for some. I use exercises on articles, chapters from books, and short stories to teach critical reading skills dealing with inference, cause and effect, main idea, context, etc. I use writing exercises combined with reading to develop comprehension. For older students, I define and have them identify literary terms like hyperbole, idiom, theme, conflict, plot, and alliteration.
I taught myself to sew by hand, making costumes, doll clothes, puppets, and repairing clothes. In college, I took a machine sewing course. During this course, I helped fellow students to learn their machines and to understand how to complete their projects. Since then, I've made curtains, a pillow, an apron, a stocking, and clothing using my sewing knowledge. I have been sewing by machine for 5 years, and by hand for 12 years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Interpretive Speech (graduated cum laude). I've taken classes on Voice and Diction, improving phonation, articulation, and resonation. Afterward, I taught Speech for 2 years at a College. As a teacher, I helped correct individuals speech problems so that they spoke Standard American English clearly. I focus on using IPA (the International Phonetic Alphabet) to teach my students the proper sounds in language.
As I earned my B.A. and M.A., I developed strong study skills. I used my methods to graduate cum laude, while still having free time for non-academic pursuits. While at college, I taught fellow students how to optimize their studying by memorizing better, using good "testmanship," understanding their own learning style, and implementing time management.
I have a Master of Arts in Performance Studies (relating to performing in theatre). Among the courses I took were classes on acting, directing, stage lighting, stage makeup, and scenic design. I performed in 4 full-length plays, and helped backstage with 9 performances. I also toured with the Shining Light Players. I personally tutored several college actors for their productions.
While earning my English minor in college, I took several writing courses, including Creative Writing and Advanced Creative Writing. I've written poetry, prose, and non-fiction. Later, I wrote a 47-page Monodrama about the historical figure, Mary Slessor that was performed before 200+ people. I have also published several newsletter articles. For 5 years, I have tutored students in English writing and composition.
