About Tonie

I am passionate about reading, writing and helping students to understand the social sciences. In the words of William Butler Yeats, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire!" I am a highly effective tutor, with a proven track record of success in teaching and tutoring. While I finished my B.A. in Professional Writing and Editing, I tutored Writing, Reading (including speed reading), English, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Study Skills. As a Professional Writing and Editing major, I completed coursework in Journalism, English, British and American Literature, Linguistics, Editing (i.e., grammar), and Writing.

I am currently finishing my doctorate at the University of Virginia in Sociology. My inner-disciplinary approach to sociology means that I have knowledge of several other social sciences including History, Political Science, Government, Gender Studies, American Studies, Criminology and Economics. I have taught an introductory sociology course at the University of Mary Washington in addition to working as a teaching assistant at the University of Virginia for the following courses: Systems of Inequality, Criminology, Gender and Violence and Sociology of the Family. I am excited to tutor students (especially high school, undergraduates and early-career graduate students) in any of the following areas: American Studies, Criminology, Economics, English, ESL, Gender Studies, General Study Skills and Reading Strategies, Government, History, Journalism, Political Science, Sociology and Writing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I am currently finishing my PhD in Sociology. Anthropology and sociology overlap in important ways including some of the research methods used and in an understanding of society and culture. I have taken coursework in Anthropology and my dissertation work (as well as some other research projects) has drawn heavily upon Anthropology.

Criminal Justice

I worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Virginia for a Criminology/Criminal Justice course. My work as a teaching assistant included grading papers and explaining complicated material to students in weekly discussion sessions. I also met with students who needed assistance one-on-one by walking them through the material and helping them develop study strategies. Through assisting with this course, I have developed a very wide knowledge of criminology/criminal justice research.

Social Studies

I am in the final year of finishing a Doctorate in Sociology. My M.A. is also in Sociology. Additionally, I have taught Sociology (i.e. Social Studies), at two universities. I am very adept at teaching and tutoring students in the social sciences because of my education and teaching experience.

Writing

I am a seasoned writing professional, published and excellent at collegiate communication.
