About Keaton

My name is Keaton and my passion is working with words.

I am a full time instructor of English composition courses at Kennesaw State University, where I completed my Master's degree in Professional Writing. I've worked as a professional tutor, a writing consultant, and a feature writer regularly for the past 7 years, generating content for many of Atlanta's major companies and penning features for The Guardian and Paste Magazine.

I tutor because, for me, nothing is as satisfying as unlocking the expressive potential students already possess. I have extensive experience tutoring college students (everything from freshman writers to consulting on PhD dissertations), high school and middle schools kids, and have even spent the past year working with elementary schoolchildren as a writing and language arts specialist. I believe that every student possesses an instinctive understanding of language and expression, and that my job as a tutor is to lead them to this wellspring within them.

My undergraduate degree was in Communication, however I compiled nearly enough English credits to declare a double major. I have an extensive knowledge of Literature (American, British, and World) and criticism and am capable of tutoring most texts and concepts taught in English courses, from elementary school through senior level university classes. On the GRE, my verbal reasoning (English language skills) score ranked me in the 93rd percentile in that skill set.

As a lifelong reader, a lover of books, and a student of literature, I am well-equipped as a reading tutor. I've worked with children who have trouble reading, adults learning English as a second language, and even college students struggling with a particularly tough piece of literature. My study of the structure and origins of the English language enable me to bring a technical knowledge to reading instruction, when appropriate.

My graduate work included extensive study of syntax and rhetorical grammar and I feel comfortable working with students writing in virtually every genre, since I tend to write in a variety of forms (short stories, novellas, essays, editorials, academic prose). I also obtained a perfect score on the writing section of the GRE (a 6.0), which ranked me in the 99th+ percentile of test-takers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

I was formally trained in drum set and musical theory by a member of the Percussive Arts Society and have been performing publicly on the instrument for 13 years. I've made numerous recordings with different bands and have worked as a paid session and gigging drummer. I also have three years' experience teaching drum set and musical theory to students ranging in age from five and six years old to middle aged.

English

I have a Master's degree in English and teach composition at Kennesaw State University. I've tutored dozens of students in English, ranging in age from early elementary school to college seniors. My graduate coursework has featured dozens of hours of education coursework and courses covering syntax, usage, and rhetorical grammar.

Grammar

I have a Masters degree in English (Professional Writing) and teach composition at Kennesaw State University. I've tutored dozens of students in English, ranging in age from early elementary school to college seniors. My graduate coursework has featured courses covering syntax, usage, and rhetorical grammar and I use this technical knowledge to tailor curriculum to the specific needs of each individual student I tutor.

GRE

My quantitative reasoning score on the GRE was well above average and my verbal reasoning score (164) ranked me in the 93rd percentile when I took the exam in 2012. I also achieved a perfect score on the writing portion of the test, which put me in the 99th percentile of test takers that year.

Literature

I completed 18 hours of university coursework in literature (American, British, and World) during the pursuit of my undergraduate degree and had a GPA of 4.0 in these courses. As a fiction writer, I continue to read widely from all types of literary writing and have read pretty much every text commonly used in literature courses in both the public school and university system. Consequently, I'm more than capable of teaching and tutoring on these texts using both textual analysis and literary theory.

Music Production

With over a decade's worth of experience in audio engineering, I've produced radio shows, rock bands, hip-hop projects, dance bands, and singer-songwriters. I currently work at a Recording Studio as an engineer and producer and have taught production and music theory to both adults and students.

Proofreading

My master's degree is in Professional Writing and has included coursework in syntax, grammar, and the rhetorical uses of punctuation. Consequently, I'm able to thoroughly proofread, identifying and correcting problems in sentences that may seem vaguely awkward or incorrect, but hard to fix. Over the course of my career as a writing consultant, I've proofread hundreds of documents spanning the gamut of rhetorical situations.

Public Speaking

My undergraduate degree is in Speech Communication Studies and I've spoken publicly in professional situations for most of my adult life, including manning the pulpit at churches and working as a consulting speaker for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. My unique blend of an academic background and practical experience ensures that I am able to provide a mixture of theory and practice to my tutoring in this subject.

Social Studies

My bachelor's degree was in the social sciences, including intensive coursework in social studies. My graduate coursework in pursuit of a Master's degree likewise focused on the intersection of philosophy, sociology, history, and religion. I have tutored high school, college, and graduate students in social studies and social sciences.

Writing

As a college writing instructor, I have extensive experience teaching all aspects of composition: Organization, technique, and revision. My Master's degree in Professional Writing has included coursework in English education, grammar, syntax, and creative writing. Likewise, my years of experience as a professional writer and editor ensure that I'm familiar with a variety of writing styles and conventions. Finally, having tutored dozens of students of all ages in one on one learning environments, I'm extremely familiar with the importance of constructing curriculum and learning plans based on individual students' unique strengths and weaknesses.
