Does your elementary student need help in reading or math? Is your child struggling to keep up with his/her classmates? Is he/she losing his/her confidence? If so, contact me! I can help! I am a recently retired teacher having approximately 30 years of experience in grades K through 6.
I am familiar with the Georgia Performance Standards and various curricula. In 1995, I trained at Georgia State to become a Reading Recovery Teacher. I worked in that capacity in DeKalb County for about 8 years. This is a program in which I offered individualized reading lessons daily to the lowest first grade readers bringing them up to the average of their classes. By guiding the students to use the meaning, structure, and visuals in the text, these struggling students were able to integrate all these cues to become excellent readers!
In my most recent full-time employment, I was an EIP (Early Intervention Program) teacher. I would go into various grade level classrooms and work with the at-risk students in reading and/or math. This extra assistance allowed the students to keep up with their classmates. I consider myself a highly skilled math teacher proficient at all elementary math levels. I have always loved math and I often convince my students that math is really fun!
It is my goal as a tutor to combine my experiences with my ability to be a positive, patient, and enthusiastic teacher using a variety of methods to increase the student's confidence level and lead him/her to thoroughly understand the necessary concepts and skills. I will work with you, your child, and his/her teacher to guide him/her on the way to being successful in school.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in elementary education. I also took several graduate courses at Emory University and Georgia State. I hold a Georgia Teaching Certificate that is valid through 6/30/2012. My certified fields are: Early Childhood Education (PreK through Grade 5), and Middle Grades (Grades 4 - 8) in Reading, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math.
I trained at Georgia State, in conjunction with DeKalb County Schools, to become a Reading Recovery Teacher. This ia a highly acclaimed individualized reading program that started in New Zealand but is now used throughout the world. I worked with struggling first grade readers using this approach that was very successful.
I have over 30 years of experience teaching in Kindergarten through 6th grade. I feel I am highly qualified to tutor at the elementary level. I have spent many years working with the low achieving students. My goal is to bring learning successes to each and every child!
As a teacher with over 30 years of experience, I spent the majority of my time teaching in the primary grades. I spent about 10 years teaching beginning reading in which it is most important for the students to have a good grasp of letter sounds and phonics rules. During daily reading groups, I would always note the kinds of problems the reader encountered, and then reteach the skill or concept.
I also find it most beneficial to start teaching the child with what he/she knows. For example, if the student knows the word "cat", when he/she encounters the unknown word, "sat", it is possible to demonstrate how you can take away the "c" and put an "s" in its place to make the new word, "sat". Then it is possible to introduce new starting consonants, and model sounding out the words. And from there, it is possible to explain the pattern CVC where the middle letter will always be short.
Phonics is best when taught in conjunction with reading and writing. And a good understanding of phonics often leads to an excellent speller. As a Reading Recovery Teacher, I taught phonics in partnership with text reading and comprehension. Phonics is important in a student becoming a successful reader!
